Gothenburg University meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58,000 students and 6,800 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Marine Sciences (https://www.gu.se/marina-vetenskaper (https://www.gu.se/marina-vetenskaper)) at Gothenburg University has, with its broad scientific competence area and unique infrastructure, the most complete environment for marine research and marine education in Sweden. Only a few similar organizations exist in Europe. Through advanced research infrastructure and the activity's clear connection to society's needs and challenges, the department contributes to new solutions for the global challenges facing the ocean.
The Department of Marine Sciences conducts research, education, and innovation related to the ocean and its resources. The activity takes place not only in Gothenburg but also at the research stations Kristineberg Marine Research Station and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, as well as on the research vessel Skagerak. The department has an interdisciplinary breadth covering marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, marine cultural heritage, and oceanography, and the research areas span geographically from the coast to the world ocean. Our researchers and students often play prominent roles in international expeditions to Antarctica, the Arctic, and the major world oceans, but also work in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analysis methods. The department also has a broad educational palette, including an undergraduate program, three master's programs, and doctoral education in the marine field.
Job Description
The Department of Marine Sciences is looking for a project assistant for field sampling and DNA extractions, and, as time permits, population genomic analyses of eelgrass within a research project aimed at establishing a baseline for genetic diversity in eelgrass in Halland. In addition, the assistant will help with sampling the areal distribution of eelgrass along the entire Swedish west coast.
The tasks consist of collecting eelgrass in Halland and performing DNA extractions, as well as, to a lesser extent, mapping the distribution of eelgrass using drop-video and drones.
The work will primarily be based at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory. Residence in the area may therefore be necessary during the summer. Other, smaller tasks within the research group Zorro (http://www.gu.se/forskning/zorro (http://www.gu.se/forskning/zorro)) may also be relevant during the summer.
Qualifications
Good experience of laboratory work and laboratory analyses, such as chemical analyses and DNA extractions, is required. Experience in independently organizing and conducting field sampling by snorkeling is a strong merit. Experience with seagrass sampling is also desirable. A driver's license and experience with small boats are also desirable.
Employment
The employment period is up to 6 months and the extent is estimated to be 100% with placement at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory. Appointment as soon as possible.
