The Department of Pedagogy is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences, with approximately 80 employees. Prioritized research areas within the department include Sports Pedagogy, Leadership, Organization and Working Life, Pedagogy in a Digital World, Didactics, Educational History and Assessment, Special Needs Education, as well as Gender and Pedagogical Processes in Society.
The department offers a wide range of educational programs and participates in several programs, including Teacher Education programs, Sport and Exercise Science programs, Human Resource Management programs, Behavioral Science programs with an emphasis on IT environments, and Police Education.
Focus of the Doctoral PositionThe doctoral position is in Pedagogy, with a focus on sports pedagogy and the educational mission of sports. This implies an interest in the education, training, and learning that take place within the organized framework and institutional context of SISU Sports Instructors, and raising questions about the conditions for knowledge formation and learning in relation to operational development.
The position will be based at Umeå University, Department of Pedagogy, and linked to research in the field of Sports Pedagogy. The focus of the position entails expectations for studies that connect to research concerning governance and organizational issues in the sports education system.
This doctoral position is advertised in collaboration with the Graduate School in the Educational Sciences, which offers a cohesive environment for doctoral education in the educational sciences at Umeå University. You will combine your doctoral studies at a department with being part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary doctoral group and gain access to national and international research networks. Qualifications
To be eligible for employment as a doctoral student, basic and specific eligibility requirements must be met.
Basic Eligibility is met by those who a) have completed an advanced level degree, or b) have fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level, or c) have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country (Higher Education Act Chapter 7, Section 39).
To meet the requirement for specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral studies in Pedagogy, the applicant must have a basic higher education degree in Pedagogy of at least 90 higher education credits, and a) have completed an advanced level degree in Pedagogy, or b) have 60 higher education credits at an advanced level in Pedagogy, or c) have other equivalent relevant education of corresponding scope and depth. The requirements are considered met by those who have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
In the selection among eligible applicants, priority is given to:
- ability to benefit from the education,
- previous academic results, and
- the quality of the submitted research plan, in relation to the focus of the advertised doctoral position.
The following assessment criteria are applied when evaluating the ability to benefit from the education:
- analytical ability,
- communicative ability, written and oral,
- critical ability,
- independence, and
- performance within given timeframes.
The applicant must have good skills in speaking and writing Swedish and English.
