The research subject Distributed Computer Systems at the Department of Systems and Space Technology at Luleå University of Technology is now seeking a postdoctoral researcher who can contribute to our growing operations. The research subject Distributed Computer Systems conducts basic research in mobile and distributed data processing, human-computer interaction, and computer networks, applied in connection with smart cities and regions, benefiting both industry and society at large.

Subject Description

Distributed Computer Systems encompasses computer systems and mobile networks that enable mobility, ambiance, security, and interactivity for computers, data, software, and users.

Project Description

The position focuses on developing new QoE (Quality of Experience) models and QoE-aware orchestration mechanisms for cloud and edge environments to enable efficient provisioning of cloud-based immersive applications, including extended reality (XR), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), cloud gaming services, and other latency-sensitive interactive services, over heterogeneous access networks such as 5G, 6G, and Wi-Fi. The successful candidate will work on areas such as:

• QoE modeling for immersive and interactive applications
• Orchestration in the cloud-edge continuum
• Resource allocation for mobile and distributed systems
• QoE-aware service provisioning under heterogeneous network conditions
• Experimental evaluation using testbeds, simulations, and real-world measurements

Responsibilities

As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work. The majority of your working time will be devoted to your own research, but you are also expected to participate in supervising degree project students and collaborating with doctoral students. Additionally, you may participate in other teaching activities at the department.

A postdoctoral position involves scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and presenting at international conferences. A postdoctoral researcher is expected to take significant responsibility for the planning and implementation of their own research project.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD in computer science or a relevant field is required. A PhD degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline is advantageous. Candidates who have obtained their PhD degree earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons, such as various types of statutory leave.

The position is suitable for candidates with a strong background in distributed systems, mobile data processing, cloud/edge computing, networks, QoE/QoS modeling, or immersive media systems.

Potential candidates are expected to have published in highly ranked international conferences and scientific journals.

The postdoctoral position is full-time and fixed-term for two years. The location of employment is Skellefteå.
