University of Gothenburg meets society's challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.
PhD Position in Theoretical/Statistical Physics (Atmospheric Physics)
The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located in central Gothenburg and has approximately 100 employees. Communication opportunities are good, both nationally and internationally. The research is conducted in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education at the department includes teaching at undergraduate and master's programs in physics, physics teacher education, and courses in physics aimed at the general public. Physics Centre Gothenburg, a close collaboration with three other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, creates an innovative environment for all the department's researchers and students.
The research group's activities are focused on statistical physics. We study the dynamics of particles in turbulent flows through mathematical analysis of statistical models. You will develop and use these models to understand the turbulent microphysics of stratocumulus clouds.
The goal of the research is to develop a simulation tool that can be integrated into modern weather and climate models. The project is funded through a new ERC Synergy project, "The role of turbulence in the physics of clouds", in collaboration with the universities of Göttingen, Berlin, and Delft.
The overall goal of the ERC project is to reduce uncertainty in weather and climate forecasts.
More information about the activities at the Department of Physics can be found at www.physics.gu.se (http://www.physics.gu.se). Additional information about Physics Centre Gothenburg can be found at www.chalmers.se/sv/centrum/fysikcentrum (http://www.chalmers.se/sv/centrum/fysikcentrum/Sidor/default.aspx).
University-wide information about what it means to be a PhD student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university's PhD pages: www.gu.se/utbildning-till-att-bli-forskare (http://www.gu.se/utbildning-till-att-bli-forskare).
Responsibilities
You are expected to independently develop mathematical models describing how microscopic water droplets grow through condensation of water vapor, shrink through evaporation, and collide in a turbulent cloud. You will contribute to the mathematical analysis of these models using both analytical and numerical methods.
Furthermore, you are expected to collaborate with colleagues within the ERC project to enable the integration of the models into large-scale computer simulations. This includes, among other things, shorter research stays in Göttingen, Berlin, and Delft, as well as participation in measurement campaigns planned within the framework of the ERC project.
Doctoral studies consist of four years of full-time study and lead to a doctoral degree.
As part of your PhD appointment, you may have departmental service duties of up to 20% of full-time, distributed over the entire period of study, which in that case results in a corresponding extension of the study period. Departmental service duties usually include teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels, but may also include research and administration.
Qualifications
Admission to doctoral studies at the research level requires basic and, where applicable, special eligibility as established in the general syllabus for the doctoral program subject.
Basic eligibility for doctoral studies at the research level is held by those who:
- have completed an advanced level degree, or
- have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at advanced level, or
- have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.
Special eligibility for doctoral studies is held by those who:
- have completed an advanced level degree in a relevant natural science subject, or
- have completed course requirements of at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level in relevant natural science subjects, or
- have acquired in other ways within or outside the country knowledge that is substantially equivalent and relevant to the planned education.
For special eligibility, the applicant must also master English in speech and writing at an acceptable level. As a guideline, 550 points on the TOEFL test (or 213 points on TOEFL-CBT, or 79 points on TOEFL-iBT) are required.

Application deadline: 2026-06-15
The University actively works for a working environment with equal conditions and values the qualities that diversity brings to the operations. According to the National Archives' regulations, the University is required to keep application documents for two years after the appointment decision. If you as an applicant specifically request the return of your documents, they will be returned when the two years have passed; otherwise, they will be destroyed.
