Research and education at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (MGeo) address fundamental and applied questions regarding Earth's past, present, and future climate and environment, including human interaction with nature and its consequences for human well-being. MGeo develops and applies pioneering methods, models, and techniques within environmental science, Quaternary and bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, geographic information science (GIS), and computational science in environment and health to study processes ranging from the microscopic to the planetary, across all time scales.
ICOS Carbon Portal is the data center for the international research infrastructure International Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and is located at Lund University at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. ICOS-CP is part of ICOS ERIC, which produces high-quality long-term measurements of greenhouse gas exchange in the areas of atmosphere, ecosystem, and ocean. The Carbon Portal provides access to all ICOS standardized greenhouse gas data as well as scientific and educational products produced by our scientific users. The Carbon Portal is thus a "one-stop shop" for all ICOS data products. The Carbon Portal also (co-)develops web services for users that support the scientific exploration of data.
We are looking for an experienced backend developer to join our small team working with services for open scientific data. You will have the opportunity to work with a variety of tasks depending on your skills, interests, and the team's needs. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing self-hosted web services, has extensive experience with statically typed languages, and is well-versed in functional programming concepts.

Responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable and efficient applications using Scala 3 in an open-source environment.
- Work with a triplestore database using RDF, OWL, and SPARQL. Previous experience is advantageous but not required.
- Debug and resolve issues in production and development environments.
- Contribute to code reviews, participate in team discussions, improve technical documentation, and mentor colleagues as needed.
- Translate high-level or ambiguous requirements into clear and actionable tasks before implementation.
Qualifications
- Several years of professional experience in backend development.
- Ability to work independently and drive the process of specifying tasks.
- Professional experience with statically typed languages and functional programming.
- Proficiency with Linux and Git.
- Ability to write clear and effective documentation.
- Fluent English in both speech and writing.

Conditions
Full-time permanent employment with a desired start date of September 1, 2026, with the possibility of an earlier start date by mutual agreement. 6-month probationary period.

Research and education at the Faculty of Science are conducted within astronomy, biology, physics, earth science, chemistry, mathematics, medical radiation physics, environmental science, and physical geography.
