Project Description
Doctoral Field: Applied Physics
We are looking for a motivated candidate interested in smart microscopy methods to join the Advanced Optical Bio-Imaging Laboratory (http://www.testalab.org) in Stockholm as a doctoral student.
The position focuses on the development of software for real-time image generation in super-resolution microscopy to rapidly monitor changes in dynamic samples. The project will involve theoretical work to optimally achieve image generation and close collaboration with microscope builders and users in the laboratory to implement the new tools.
The project will be carried out at the biophysics unit of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), located at SciLifeLab in Stockholm, a national hub for life science excellence in Sweden with pioneering laboratories and a vibrant interdisciplinary environment.
Supervision: Prof. Ilaria Testa is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decision is made upon admission.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed an advanced level degree, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
Selection
To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:
- independently drive your work forward,
- collaborate with others,
- have a professional approach, and
- analyze and work with complex issues.
- Previous experience with light microscopy imaging data and coding.
- Analysis of high-resolution microscopic images.
- Electronics for microscope control.
- Advanced programming experience primarily in Python.
- Awareness of diversity and equal treatment, with a particular focus on gender equality.
- Collaborative skills.
- Independence.
- Proficiency in English as we work in an international environment.
After meeting the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment
Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral students. The total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. An employed doctoral student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In studies to be concluded with a Licentiate degree, the total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over two years.
