Practical training is conducted over a six-month period and is a requirement for doctors with foreign education who are applying for Swedish licensure via the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen). This is therefore not a permanent position, but a time-limited period during which your medical knowledge and skills are assessed.

Formal requirements to apply for practical training

Applicants for practical training must be doctors with foreign education from outside the EU/EEA and must have passed the National Board of Health and Welfare's knowledge test.

The following documents must be attached to the application:

• Decision from the National Board of Health and Welfare regarding 6 months of practical training
• Certificate/grade in Swedish equivalent to Swedish 3/Swedish as a Second Language 3, level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), or proof of eligibility for higher education studies
• CV

If you are currently in Sweden and hold a work permit or residence permit for studies from the Swedish Migration Agency, please inform us of this in your application.

Implementation Process

The International Office receives all expressions of interest and subsequently contacts suitable clinics or health centers to investigate the possibility of offering a place for practical training. The International Office does not have its own places to offer. The availability of places within Region Östergötland varies over time, which means that unfortunately we cannot offer practical training to all applicants. We therefore recommend that you also apply to other regions.

If the clinic or health center has the capacity to accept a doctor for practical training, you will be invited to an interview. Following this, the head of operations makes the decision on whether practical training can be offered.
