Description

Since January 2026, the Language Centre (Språkcentrum) in the City of Gothenburg has been part of the Primary School Administration. Our mission is to support multilingual students in achieving their educational goals. Currently, we primarily do this by offering mother tongue instruction and study guidance to students in primary schools, adapted primary schools, upper secondary schools, adapted upper secondary schools, and also to independent actors. Most of our students are within the primary school sector.

At the Language Centre, approximately 200 teachers teach nearly 12,000 students in around 70 languages.

Our organization also includes a reception team that supports primary schools in welcoming newly arrived students.

Responsibilities

We are currently seeking a Unit Manager responsible for a team of just over thirty employees. As a Unit Manager, you will be part of a management group consisting of five other unit managers and an operations manager. Based on the Language Centre's broadened mission to contribute to strengthening the learning and goal achievement of multilingual students, we are reviewing our internal organization. You will play a vital role in this work.

The role includes both an operational mandate to organize and develop teaching and support together with fellow managers, lead teachers, and mother tongue teachers, and a strategic mandate to develop work on multilingualism across the entire Primary School Administration in close collaboration with the schools.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A university degree of at least 180 credits with a pedagogical focus.
  • At least 4 years of experience working in the Swedish school system.
  • Experience working as a leader/manager in a pedagogical setting.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and national steering documents.
  • Insight into financial management.
  • Insight into laws, regulations, and collective agreements concerning employer responsibilities.
  • Experience with some form of school development.

It is an advantage if you have:

  • Completed a leadership development program or preparatory management training.
  • Good digital competence.

As a Unit Manager, you are motivated to drive school development with clearly defined goals and have the ability to translate these into concrete action. You should be able to efficiently identify and analyze the core of a problem and propose possible solutions. You have the ability to see connections and draw logical conclusions from limited and/or complex information. In this role, you need to have an overview of your own area of responsibility and place your own operations in a broader context. Furthermore, you are a clear and good communicator who can get your ideas heard and influence decisions in a certain direction. As a Unit Manager, it is important to be receptive to understanding other people's needs, feelings, and opinions. You plan, organize, and prioritize work efficiently. You ensure that work is completed on time and follow up on the results.
