Project Description

The department announces two 4-year PhD positions that will be placed in the Department of Archaeology and will follow the examination requirements at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History. The planned PhD project should focus on prehistory, historical (especially maritime) or digital archaeology, and the position will only be filled if external funding, in the form of a PhD position from the Berit Wallenberg Foundation, is granted. The selected candidates are expected to meet the requirements for PhD students in archaeology (including extensive literature courses), publish their results in scientific journals, and present their results at international/national conferences.

Eligibility Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the last application date.

You have basic eligibility if you have completed a degree at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

Specific eligibility according to https://medarbetare.su.se/vart-su/organisation/humanvetenskapliga-omradet/humanistiska-fakulteten/riktlinjer-for-utbildning-pa-forskarniva (https://medarbetare.su.se/vart-su/organisation/humanvetenskapliga-omradet/humanistiska-fakulteten/riktlinjer-for-utbildning-pa-forskarniva) requires that you have completed courses at the advanced level of at least 30 hp in archaeology with a passing grade, including a thesis of at least 15 hp.

Selection

Selection among the applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from education at the doctoral level. Criteria used to assess this ability include:

  • Education in general. Assessment of both depth and breadth in previous education.
  • Scientific production. Based on theses from undergraduate and advanced levels and, where applicable, other written scientific production, the applicant's ability to benefit from the education is assessed according to the following assessment criteria:
  • Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area.
  • Analytical and creative thinking.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Independence.
  • Ability to collaborate.
  • Ability to express oneself in speech and writing in both Swedish and English.

The time aspect will also be considered in the assessment; i.e., to what extent the applicant has demonstrated the ability to complete their previous scientific tasks within given time frames.

Collaboration Ability

The applicant's ability to collaborate is assessed based on references, certificates, or interviews.
