What does it mean to work as an electrical operations engineer?
Being an electrical operations engineer at the Swedish Transport Administration means being responsible for monitoring and controlling the power supply on more than 11,000 kilometers of railway. Your contribution is crucial for ensuring that those traveling or transporting goods by rail arrive safely and on time. You will be part of a dedicated team that ensures trains run around the clock, all year round.
As an electrical operations engineer, you will:
- identify and manage alarms and perform troubleshooting
- handle commissioning of electrical installations
- map and report deviations in the electrical system to prevent future problems
- plan and coordinate maintenance work together with contractors
Important information for applicants
Basic Training
You will be employed as an electrical operations engineer and begin your basic training in August 2026. You do not need prior knowledge of railways. The training consists of both theory and practice at your traffic center. During the theoretical part, about 15 weeks will primarily be held at the Transport Administration School in Ängelholm, which requires mandatory attendance with overnight stays. Travel to other locations may also occur.
You will have a 6-month probationary employment starting on the first day of training, which will transition to a permanent position during the training period. Your ability to translate theory into practice is crucial for successfully completing the basic training.
About the Recruitment Process
Since this position is classified for traffic safety, there are regulations that must be met when we recruit. This means the process involves several steps to ensure that you meet the requirements as an applicant. We conduct tests, a recruitment day, individual psychological assessments, interviews, and for final candidates, security clearance and health examinations are also conducted. Several parts of the recruitment process require you to be physically present, and you will need to take time off from any job or studies to participate.
- Recruitment day with a presentation of the role and job-related exercises will take place on-site in Gävle in week 17
- Individual psychological assessment will be conducted physically on-site in week 19
- Final interviews are planned to be conducted digitally in weeks 21-22

QualificationsWho is suitable for this role?
We are looking for someone who prioritizes safety and quality. You are driven to deliver results against set requirements and leave nothing to chance. You have strong analytical skills and can translate theoretical knowledge into practical problem-solving. You have the ability to maintain focus and sharpness during longer periods of low workload, to quickly adapt when the situation demands it. In high-pressure situations, you remain calm and act constructively. Furthermore, we see that you have good communication skills, are clear, and ensure that the recipient has understood the information to avoid misunderstandings.
To become an electrical operations engineer, you must have:
- Completed high school education with an electrical or technical focus, or have equivalent knowledge from other studies (e.g., folk high school, adult education, vocational training)
- Good technical understanding (through studies, work, or hobbies)
- Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish
- Interest and ability to work shifts (day, evening, weekend, night, and public holidays)
It is an advantage but not a requirement if you have:
- Experience working in fast-paced environments
- Experience working in a role where it has been important to follow procedures and regulations
- Experience in work where safety has been a focus
