The Department of Pathology and Cytology at Sundsvall Hospital is a county-wide operation within Region Västernorrland, primarily responsible for all histopathological and cytological diagnostics, as well as overseeing all mortuary and autopsy activities within the region. The department is responsible for the scheduling system and administration of the gynecological cell sample control (GCK) within Region Västernorrland.
Today, between 14,000-15,000 cytological referrals and between 16,000-17,000 histopathological and molecular referrals are received. Approximately 1,100 deceased individuals arrive at the mortuary at Sundsvall Hospital each year, and about 150 deceased are autopsied annually. Our laboratory receives samples that are prepared and stained for examination under a microscope or digitally. The results we provide are crucial for making the correct diagnosis, but they are also used to predict which treatment is best suited.
About 50 people work in the Department of Pathology and Cytology, including biomedical analysts, cytodiagnosticians, autopsy technicians, and doctors in good team collaboration.
We are now looking for a biomedical analyst to join our team. The position is a full-time temporary position for one year, with the possibility of extension or permanent employment.
You will be employed in the Department of Pathology and Cytology, primarily based in the Histology Laboratory. You will be part of a team consisting of biomedical analysts, laboratory engineers, and nursing assistants responsible for the analysis process throughout.
Biomedical Analyst for the Department of Pathology and Cytology, SundsvallJob ResponsibilitiesWe work with the entire process from sample registration to diagnostics. With us, you will work both independently, making your own decisions, while also collaborating in a team. The work in pathology is broad and varied. In the histology lab, you will work with tissue samples. Tasks include embedding, cutting, sectioning, staining, immunohistochemistry, specialized cutting, and scanning of slides to create digital images for diagnostics. The work is based on having a good understanding of your part in the overall process.
Typical tasks in a pathology laboratory include:
- Unpacking/Registration of samples
- Assisting pathologists with cutting
- Embedding tissue samples
- Embedding
- Paraffin sectioning
- Manual and automated staining
- Scanning for digital diagnostics
- Fresh handling/Biobank
- Frozen sectioning

Additional InformationQualificationsWe are looking for someone who
- Is a licensed biomedical analyst or will be licensed shortly
- Has good knowledge of Swedish in both spoken and written form
It is advantageous if you
- Have work experience in pathology and cytology
- Have completed clinical training in the pathology and cytology department
- Have had a pathology focus during your studies
