University ST-Doctor in Cardiology

The Heart Center is located at Norrlands University Hospital (NUS) in Umeå and consists of the units of cardiology, clinical physiology, arrhythmia unit, coronary angiography and PCI unit, thoracic surgery, and thoracic anesthesia, employing approximately 400 staff. Within the Heart Center, there is highly specialized care with regional responsibility for cardiovascular diseases in adults in the northern region, county and district care with investigation, treatment, nursing, rehabilitation, and preventive care, as well as work with public health. Here, there is laboratory diagnostics, high technology, intensive care along with regular wards and outpatient clinics.

Through cross-border collaboration, effective care chains, continuous improvement work, and above all, engaged and competent staff, we can offer care of very high quality. Research and development work is very important, as is every employee's responsibility and participation in various healthcare education and further training.

The cardiology department consists of three units: the ward, heart intensive care unit (HIA), and the investigation unit, which together conduct a mix of planned activities, intensive care, and emergency cases from the emergency department.

The ward cares for patients with heart failure, angina, post-care after heart attacks, arrhythmias, and more. In the HIA, patients with acute heart attacks, threatening angina, or serious cardiac arrhythmias are cared for. The investigation unit is a weekly care unit where patients from the four northernmost counties are investigated and treated in connection with coronary investigations, balloon dilatation (PCI), investigations prior to valve surgery, bypass surgery, and electrophysiological procedures such as ablations, pacemaker/ICD insertions, PFO closures, and much more.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a University ST-Doctor with us, you contribute to taking good care of others and helping people feel better.

To be considered, the research must be placed at the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University and fall within the framework of ALF, i.e., clinical research of high quality with clear patient or population benefit and relevance to healthcare, and/or translational research with clear clinical relevance. The project will be assessed based on innovation and originality, scientific quality, the applicant's competence, and the project's feasibility.

Applications for university ST positions are assessed by a review group appointed by the ALF committee, with representatives from Umeå University and regions in the northern healthcare region. Final ranking of applications will be made by the ALF committee based on the review group's recommendations.

Cardiology is a versatile specialty. We collaborate closely with the Medicine Center and intensive care regarding the acute management of patients with heart diseases, staffing the cardiology ward and heart intensive care unit, and conducting outpatient activities at the heart clinic.

At NUS, there are also several more specialized units that are fully or partially staffed by cardiologists. The arrhythmia and PCI labs mainly work with catheter-based interventions for arrhythmias and coronary diseases and heart defects.

As part of our university hospital mission, we investigate and treat patients with cardiomyopathies and other hereditary heart/vessel diseases, adults with congenital heart defects, severe or complicated heart failure cases, and have a responsibility for introducing new treatment modalities throughout the northern healthcare region. The role also includes supervising students.

In addition to the specialty-specific program, you as a ST-Doctor will also participate in EKA training. A program focusing on leadership, economics, communication, administration, ethics, and time for personal reflection for ST-Doctors within Region Västerbotten.

QUALIFICATIONS

You have a Swedish medical license with the authority to practice within Swedish healthcare by the time of appointment. You have an interest in specializing in cardiology. We are looking for someone who has defended their thesis and intends to continue researching at the postdoctoral level and has a doctorate no older than 3 years.

You must have a doctorate from 2022-11-03 or later, but no later than the application deadline. Time counted after the defense includes parental leave, illness, compulsory military service, trust assignments within trade union organizations and student organizations, foreign postdoc, as well as studies in medical programs and AT.

If you are already a ST-Doctor, your current title will change to University ST-Doctor. To be eligible for the position, you must have enough time left to utilize the entire allocated time as a University ST-Doctor before obtaining your specialist certificate. This means you must have no less than 24 months of full-time clinical service remaining in your ongoing ST at the time of appointment. Remaining time should be stated and counted from the date of appointment.

Consideration will be given to personal suitability and ability to cooperate.

We require good knowledge of the Swedish language corresponding to level C1.
