Specialist or Senior Physician in Spine Surgery

We are currently seeking an independent specialist or senior physician in spine surgery who wants to combine advanced clinical practice with the opportunity to influence, develop, and contribute long-term to the spine service within Region Östergötland.

The position involves work with both acute and elective spine surgery as well as participation in the regional spine on-call service.

Our Offer

The Center for Surgery, Orthopedics, and Cancer Care (CKOC) provides healthcare, research, and education in orthopedics, surgery, urology, oncology, hematology, and pulmonary medicine in Östergötland and within the Southeast Healthcare Region.

The orthopedic clinic at the University Hospital in Linköping is a large and well-established operation with approximately 150 employees. The clinic includes a care department with a teaching ward, outpatient clinic, and rehabilitation unit, providing both acute and planned orthopedic care. In addition to basic orthopedics, the clinic's specialties include spine surgery, tumor surgery, pediatric orthopedics, and upper and lower extremity surgery, with a mandate to handle patients from the entire Southeast Healthcare Region.

Job Description

As a specialist or senior physician in the spine section, you will work in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The work is interdisciplinary and team-based, with established collaborations and networks with other specialties as well as regular multidisciplinary conferences.

On-call duty is included in the position. Following the introduction of the acute physician system, the clinic has no primary on-call. Instead, a secondary on-call is staffed, and as part of the university hospital's trauma management, an orthopedic on-call and a separate spine on-call service are available around the clock. As a spine on-call physician, you will provide support to healthcare providers throughout the Southeast Healthcare Region.

The spine service at the University Hospital is organized so that the neurosurgical clinic handles cervical spine cases, while the orthopedic clinic's spine surgeons are responsible for thoracic and lumbar spine injuries.

Teaching medical students is a natural and important part of the work. As a university hospital unit, we prioritize research, with active research in almost all our profile areas. There is an opportunity for doctoral education with supervision at the clinic, as well as the possibility to continue research for those who are already doctoral graduates.

Work Group

The spine section's medical group currently consists of eight colleagues with extensive experience in spine surgery. The group is undergoing a generational shift, where several senior colleagues work part-time or are approaching retirement, while younger colleagues focused on spine surgery are being developed.

This creates good opportunities for you as a specialist or senior physician to take a clear and long-term role in the operation – clinically, strategically, and as a mentor and knowledge resource.

About You

We are looking for you who is a specialist physician in orthopedics or neurosurgery and who is independent in spine surgery. Experience from related areas is an advantage.

As a person, you are attentive, clear in your communication, and have an easy time collaborating. You are happy to share your knowledge and actively contribute to a good work environment. You have a positive attitude, see opportunities in change, and take responsibility for your work with commitment and a holistic perspective.

You have an interest in education and research and are happy to act as support and knowledge resource for colleagues and other professions. The assignment includes participation in the clinic's spine on-call service as well as some administrative tasks. You may also hold trust assignments and actively engage in research and education.

The work involves continuous dialogue with patients, relatives, colleagues, and other operations, which is why very good knowledge of the Swedish language in speech and writing is a requirement.
