Corrections Officer for Sörbyn Prison

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our primary goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, remand facilities, and client transport.

The Umeå area includes the closed prison Umeå, the open prison Sörbyn, and the remand facility Umeå. We are undergoing significant capacity increases, and there is much happening in the area in terms of renovations and new constructions. The largest professional group is corrections officers, but we also have healthcare professionals, administrative staff, educators, production leaders, etc. At Sörbyn prison, inmates are engaged in labor market training, learning centers, various treatment programs, or work in kitchens, carpentry, horticulture, textiles, etc. Sörbyn prison is an agricultural prison with grain cultivation and animal husbandry. At Umeå prison, inmates are engaged in wood/industry, kitchens, learning centers, and treatment programs. The prison and remand facility Umeå are about a 10-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, and Sörbyn prison can only be reached by car. Staff parking is available at all units.

JOB DESCRIPTION

As a corrections officer, you will be part of a team where you have daily contact with clients. The tasks at the prison are varied: care, surveillance, searching, and security work are mixed with release planning and conversation/motivation work.

Working as a corrections officer means you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that people can develop.

You will start your employment at the workplace where you will receive an introduction over three weeks. After a period of service, you will be offered a place in the mandatory basic training for corrections officers, which lasts 8 weeks. You will receive a salary throughout the training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments will be conducted regarding your eligibility for permanent employment.

In this recruitment process, an information meeting will take place a few weeks after the application period has ended. If you are called for an interview, you are expected to participate in the information meeting.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important. As a corrections officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you will drive the operations, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Work experience, including seasonal work, part-time employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment.
  • Completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant.
  • Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both spoken and written form.
  • Good computer skills.

It is advantageous if you have:

  • Work experience from corrections, security work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare and social work.
  • Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management.
  • Relevant language skills.
  • A valid driver's license (B).
