Are you ready to become a key person in the safety of the community? We are looking for you who want to combine your civilian job with a meaningful mission – to be a firefighter on standby (RIB). As a RIB firefighter, you are an important part of the rescue service and a source of security for the residents in your area. You will have the opportunity to make a real difference while developing both physically and mentally.

Currently, about 180 people work as firefighters at our RIB stations (rescue personnel on standby) throughout the municipality. But we need to grow – women and men from different backgrounds. Right now, we are looking for reinforcement for our RIB stations in:

YOUR ROLE

As a firefighter on standby, you are employed by the rescue service in Skellefteå municipality. You participate in emergency responses, drills, and training – and receive compensation for both response time and standby. A RIB unit averages 40–50 alarms per year, with each response taking about an hour.

The standby can vary depending on your life situation – full week standby is desirable, but there is also the possibility of evening, night, or day standby. You will become part of a local team that collaborates closely and plays an important role in the community's safety work.

YOUR COMPETENCE AND EXPERIENCE

To become a RIB firefighter, you need to:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have a B driver's license
• Be in good physical condition and healthy
• Have good communication skills in Swedish, both spoken and written
• Live or work so that you can be at the fire station within 5 minutes
• Pass our recruitment tests: interview, swimming and fitness test, and medical examination
• Have your employer's and family's consent

You should also enjoy working with people and have a calm and solution-focused approach in stressful situations.

The training follows MSB's program and consists of several steps, including smoke diving and a C driver's license. The goal is for you to complete the entire training package within two years. The rescue service in Skellefteå follows MSB's (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) training program. Here are the steps in brief:

1. You have passed and been approved in the recruitment requirements and tests.
2. A 2-week training at MSB, where self-study is mixed with distance and on-site studies, Course 1.
3. A 2-week training in Skellefteå which includes, among other things, smoke diving.
4. After this point in the training, you can start joining a standby group in your hometown and respond to alarms.
5. However, the training is not complete, and you need to supplement with a 3-week training at one of the MSB training locations, the nearest being in Luleå, Sundsvall, or Sandö, Course 2. An individual training plan is set for each person. For practical reasons, most people usually follow each other throughout the entire training period. Obtaining a C driver's license (truck license) is also included in the training.

The rescue service is part of the Community Building Administration in Skellefteå municipality. We have eleven fire stations and a rescue service spread across the municipality. The largest station is located in central Skellefteå, where our full-time staff works.
