Correctional Officer with Functional Assignment to Umeå Prison

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society becomes safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transport.

The Umeå operational area includes the closed prison Umeå, the open prison Sörbyn, and the Umeå detention center. We are undergoing significant capacity increases, and many changes are happening in the operational area in terms of renovations and new constructions. The largest professional group is correctional officers, but we also have healthcare professionals, administrative staff, educators, production leaders, etc. At Sörbyn prison, inmates are engaged in labor market training, learning centers, various treatment programs, or work in the kitchen, carpentry, plant cultivation, textiles, etc. Sörbyn prison is an agricultural facility with grain cultivation and animal husbandry. At Umeå prison, inmates are engaged in wood/industry, kitchen, learning centers, and treatment programs. The Umeå prison and detention center are about a 10-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, while Sörbyn prison is only accessible by car. Staff parking is available at all units.

We are now looking for correctional officers with functional assignments to Umeå prison. The temporary position runs until December 31, 2026, with a desired start date of May 4, 2026.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a correctional officer, you are the foundation of the security work. You work in a team with others to maintain a safe and secure operation and motivate clients to lead a life without crime. The tasks are varied: care, surveillance, searches, and security work are mixed with release planning and conversation/motivation work.

Structure and clear routines are a natural part of your daily work. You have daily contact with clients, conduct conversations, and are involved in the clients' processes. Your work includes documenting and following up on client cases. As a correctional officer, you are the one who opens the door in the morning and locks it in the evening. There are good opportunities to develop and specialize in the role depending on your interests. As a correctional officer, you are part of a team where you have daily contact with the client.

In this role, you will be part of a team that will perform a functional assignment related to goods transport over an extended period. On days when you do not drive transports, you will work in the department and perform the tasks described above.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operation, so you need to have good collaboration skills and be clear in your communication. You must be able to act physically when required.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment.
• Completed upper secondary education or other education in combination with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant.
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing.
• Good computer skills.
• Category B driver's license and good driving experience.

It is an advantage if you have:

• Work experience in correctional services, security work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare and social work.
• Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management.
• Relevant language skills.
• Over 2 years of experience with light trucks and/or courier vehicles or other vehicles deemed relevant by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.
