Are you a passionate and dedicated veterinarian with an interest in exotic and wild animals? Do you thrive in a changing environment and have a passion for field clinical work? Then you might be the one we are looking for!

More and more animal species are threatened with extinction today, and zoos play an increasingly important role in contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. As the largest zoo in the Nordics, conservation, research, and education are our primary and most important tasks. We work both to ensure that the animals at Kolmården are well cared for in the zoo and to preserve endangered species in the wild by supporting and contributing to conservation projects in their natural habitats. Additionally, zoos have a significant responsibility to educate people on how to maintain the balance between humans and nature.

About the position

We are now looking for a veterinarian who wants to become part of our dedicated team. The position offers a unique opportunity to work with a wide variety of animal species, from birds to ungulates and large carnivores, with a focus on field clinical work. Your work will include both routine animal health care and emergency interventions, where each day presents new and exciting challenges. You will be a key person in our veterinary team and will closely collaborate with our animal caretakers, zoologist, and animal coordinator.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Clinical assessments, treatments, and procedures: disease, laboratory, and necropsy diagnostics, treatment, and preventive care of our animals. This may involve everything from routine procedures to emergency tasks, with a large part of the clinical work taking place in field environments in close collaboration with your colleagues. You will also handle follow-ups of fieldwork, e.g., clinical work and investigations, but usually in a laboratory environment at the clinic. You will work proactively to strengthen the clinic and continuously develop its functions.
  • Health programs: Development, implementation, and maintenance of animal health programs for the park's various species. This includes, for example, nutrition plans, vaccination programs, short- and long-term health programs, and follow-ups.
  • Documentation and administration: In addition to record-keeping of clinical work, tasks include planning and coordinating everything from clinical procedures to documentation and updating routines, as well as developing clinic operations.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Swedish veterinary license.
  • At least two years of clinical experience as a veterinarian.
  • BE driver's license.
  • Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written.
  • Swedish hunting license (Class 1) or willingness to obtain one (as it is mandatory for the job).
  • Completed immobilization course or willingness to take one (as it is mandatory for the job).

It is an advantage if you have interest, experience, and clinical skills in:

  • A wide range of animal species (large animals, small animals, and/or exotic pets)
  • Anesthesia and surgery.
  • Nutrition and feeding science.
  • Ultrasound and radiographic diagnostics.

About you

We are looking for someone with a strong passion for animals and nature who is ready to work in a dynamic and challenging environment. As a person, you are unpretentious, humble, and solution-oriented. You are ambitious and proactive in your own and the team's development and have the ability to work both independently and in a group. Since personal interactions with guests as well as other employees are a significant part of the job, we see that you are communicative, pedagogical, and interested in collaborating with different functions and departments. You are structured, work safety-oriented, and can maintain calm and structure even when the work pace is high. Since the job can be physically demanding, it is an advantage if you have good endurance and physique.

Employment

The position is a permanent employment with an initial 6-month probation period. The extent of work is according to agreement, but we prefer that you can work between 80-100%.

Start date is according to agreement.

The work takes place during daytime together with on-call operations, which may involve work in the evenings and weekends. You will be covered by the collective agreement for veterinary care/zoos signed between SLA and Unionen/Sveriges veterinärförbund. Salary according to agreement.
