Department of Clinical Sciences

The University Animal Hospital and the Equine Division are seeking horse-experienced veterinary nurses and animal caregivers for hourly paid employment.

About the Job

With us, you will contribute to a positive development in a university environment that is overflowing with knowledge in many areas. You will operate in a dynamic world with clinical challenges at the forefront of research.

When you start your hourly paid employment with us, you will always receive a thorough introduction to the work and great support from experienced and generous colleagues. We are professionals in clinical supervision and education; no question is too silly for us, as we enjoy explaining and teaching.

Depending on your education and previous experience, the tasks will vary:

  • Cleaner: clean boxes, feed, wash dishes, tidy up, etc. As a cleaner, you primarily work morning shifts.
  • Foal Attendant: Assist with foals at the clinic, milk mares, wash, tidy up, etc. As a foal attendant, work may occur around the clock.
  • Nurse: medicate, feed, care for inpatients, receive emergency patients, answer the phone, assist veterinarians, clean, wash dishes, clean boxes, etc. As a nurse, work may occur around the clock.

During your employment in the equine division, you will mentor future veterinary nurses and veterinarians, as well as interns from animal high schools.

The shifts are scheduled around the clock.

Your Background

We are looking for you who are an animal caregiver level 1 or 2 for horses, licensed veterinary nurse, or temporary veterinary nurse. Good horse experience is a requirement. Experience in equine healthcare at a veterinary hospital is an advantage.

As a person, you are organized, structured, motivated, and have integrity. You possess good communication and social skills and recognize the importance of maintaining good customer relations and addressing pet owners professionally. You are a good team player and prioritize the overall operations of the equine clinic over your own unit. We will place great emphasis on your personal abilities.

About Us

The Department of Clinical Sciences is responsible for undergraduate education, research, and doctoral education in anesthesiology, imaging diagnostics, animal care, epidemiology, laboratory animal science, surgery, clinical chemistry, internal medicine, and reproduction. Our operations span all animal species.

At SLU University Animal Hospital (UDS), education, research, and advanced veterinary care go hand in hand. We train tomorrow's veterinarians and veterinary nurses and provide first-class care for companion animals, competition animals, and production animals. We also disseminate knowledge to the public. By combining established knowledge with the latest research results, we develop the future of veterinary care.

Under one roof, we offer healthcare for horses, dogs, cats, and other small animals. In addition to modern, operationally adapted facilities, we have access to advanced imaging diagnostics and a veterinary medical specialist laboratory. UDS also includes an ambulatory unit that travels to stables and farms to examine and treat horses and livestock.

The equine clinic has about 50 employees and annually receives about 5,000 horses. The clinic currently has three departments: outpatient clinic with orthopedic cases and specialist clinics in respiration, dentistry, dermatology, and ophthalmology; a care department with both surgical and medical patients; and an operating department with both scheduled and emergency surgeries. Our work environment is characterized by commitment, joy, quality, and service. Here you can develop in a dynamic and stimulating environment.
