Experienced Meteorologist Wanted for Expedition on Icebreaker Oden

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat is a government agency that promotes and coordinates Swedish polar research. The agency is responsible for long-term planning of research and research infrastructure, as well as organizing and conducting research expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica.

The agency's overarching goal is to contribute to increased international impact for Swedish polar research through collaboration, high-quality research infrastructure, and international partnerships.

The operations include, among others, the Abisko Scientific Station, Kristineberg Marine Research Station, the icebreaker Oden, and the Swedish research stations Wasa and Svea in Antarctica. The Polar Research Secretariat has about 50 employees and is located in Luleå, Abisko, Helsingborg, and Fiskebäckskil.

The Polar Research Secretariat is now seeking an experienced meteorologist to work on the icebreaker Oden during the Canada-Sweden Arctic Ocean 2025 expedition. This expedition is a joint expedition with Canada tasked with investigating the seabed in the Central Arctic Ocean. The person assigned to be the meteorologist on board will fly from Oslo to Longyearbyen in Svalbard and board the icebreaker Oden around August 10, 2026. The research expedition, including a research school on board, will last for 6 weeks, and around September 20, the person will disembark from the icebreaker Oden in Longyearbyen to fly home via Oslo.

Job Responsibilities

As a meteorologist on the expedition, you will be responsible for forecasting, observation services, and flight management related to helicopter operations on board I/B Oden. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the expedition management and helicopter personnel, often under time pressure and with high demands for accuracy and independence.

Requirements

  • University degree in physics with a major in meteorology (bachelor's or master's degree)
  • Completed and approved PMU (Forecast Meteorologist Training)
  • At least 5 years of experience as a forecasting meteorologist in aviation weather services
  • Experience in forecasting work and consultation for helicopter operations in a subarctic environment

IT and System Knowledge

  • Very good knowledge of the Office suite
  • Very good knowledge of file management systems
  • Good knowledge of FTP, email, file transfer, and good computer skills including independent troubleshooting
  • Good understanding of and good knowledge in radio management (VHF and aviation radio)
  • Good understanding of Dartcom software, including:
    • Macros
    • Image management
    • Channel management
  • Good knowledge of the Helipanel program
  • Good understanding of Cloud Presentation software
  • Knowledge of meteorological measurement systems on board IB Oden
  • Good skills in SYNOP and observation services
  • Good understanding of helicopter operations and flight coordination

Meritorious

  • Good knowledge of weapon use
  • Previous experience of expedition work and/or military operations or exercises
