Department of Clinical Sciences

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with strong expertise in Precision Livestock Farming, sensor technology, and data analysis for research focused on automated health monitoring of dairy cows.

About the Job

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead a newly initiated research project aimed at translating sensor-based health monitoring into practical decision support for farmers, in close collaboration with an industry partner. The project focuses on automated assessment of rumen fill using 3D imaging, computer vision, and predictive modeling.

The postdoctoral researcher will further develop an existing algorithm for rumen fill assessment into a functioning prototype and test the technology for longitudinal monitoring of individual cows. The work also includes the design and implementation of an observational study on animal health, where structured health checks are conducted together with veterinarians to link rumen fill dynamics to feed intake and early signs of disease. Based on this data, predictive models for early health warnings will be developed in collaboration with a statistician.

The research is conducted within a multidisciplinary research group across several institutions. The position offers ample opportunity for independent work, method development, project management, and collaboration with both academia and industry.

The postdoctoral researcher will be affiliated with the Unit of Epidemiology and is also expected to contribute relevant expertise to other projects within the unit to a limited extent, as well as participate in the department's activities such as seminars, events, and applications.

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to:

  • conduct independent and high-quality research within the project's focus
  • develop, validate, and refine predictive models and algorithms
  • plan and execute data collection at research facilities
  • analyze and interpret data from sensors, 3D imaging, and health assessments
  • collaborate with academic and industrial partners
  • publish research results in international, peer-reviewed journals
  • communicate research findings to both academic and non-academic audiences

Qualifications

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must:

  • have obtained a PhD, preferably within three years prior to the application deadline, or expect to obtain the degree before the start date (planned start date: March 1, 2026)
  • hold a master's degree or equivalent in agricultural engineering, precision agriculture, computer science, machine learning, automated systems, or a related field
  • have experience working with ruminants
  • have experience in precision agriculture and/or Precision Livestock Farming
  • have experience working in both academia and industry, preferably within the agricultural sector
  • have strong data analysis skills and the ability to translate sensor data into actionable information for milk production
  • demonstrate a high degree of independence, responsibility, and project management skills
  • have excellent communication skills in both spoken and written Swedish and English

Desirable Qualifications

  • strong publication record in established journals
  • documented ability to secure external research funding
  • experience in computer vision and 3D imaging
  • experience in data engineering and data collection procedures
  • experience in designing data collection systems, including sensor placement in barn environments
