As a Food Inspector

As a food inspector, you have a significant role – and it feels good to make a difference! You maintain and contribute to good animal welfare for Sweden's production animals. At the same time, you contribute to sustainable food development, ensuring that the food in Sweden is safe to eat and that food consumers are not deceived.

A Societal Important Mission

As a food inspector at the Swedish Food Agency, you are an important link in the chain for safe food. You are an authority figure with a control mission but should also act as support and facilitate for the entrepreneur to do the right thing.

You are responsible for inspecting animal carcasses after slaughter and making an assessment of whether the meat can be approved as food or should be further examined by an official veterinarian. You may also be required to perform some sampling.

You will have good opportunities to deepen your knowledge in animal welfare, pathology, microbiology, and food safety while learning a lot about food production. With us, you will utilize your knowledge from your veterinary studies and have the opportunity to develop them in practice! During the summer, you will also get to experience the everyday life of our knowledgeable employees and gain deeper insight into what the various roles entail.

Often, you will be stationed at one of our larger slaughterhouses and work side by side with other food inspectors or the responsible official veterinarian, who will support you in your assessments.

We are looking for employees in several locations across the country!

Regardless of placement, you will receive a proper introduction to the work. You do not need to have any previous work experience.

Your Competencies

You should have completed year 3 of the Swedish veterinary education with a passing grade in the food safety course, or have equivalent knowledge from another EU-approved veterinary education. For those studying abroad, you must also be approved in the food hygiene course(s). You are also eligible if you are a veterinarian but lack Swedish veterinary authorization, or have completed the Swedish Food Agency's training to become a food inspector. You should have good knowledge of Swedish in both spoken and written form. A driving license (B) is required in some locations but not all.

As a person, you need to be flexible, punctual, and able to make well-founded decisions and take initiatives. You have high personal maturity with the ability to reflect on your own strengths and areas for development, as well as being able to see and contribute to the whole. You dare to make the decisions required in consultation with your colleagues and supervisor.

You have good collaboration skills and enjoy building good relationships. You willingly share your knowledge and experience while being open to learning from others, as it is together with colleagues that you succeed and develop. Conversations in meetings with entrepreneurs and in contact with other stakeholders are also part of the job, which requires you to be clear, professional, and attentive in your communication. We will place great emphasis on your personal qualities.

Interested?

We are looking for summer substitutes in several locations. When you submit your application, you can choose which locations you are interested in. If you are registered in a location that is more than 10 miles from the placement location, we offer a housing supplement if the workplace cannot provide accommodation options. We will also reimburse you for travel costs for your arrival and return trip. However, the housing supplement and travel reimbursement do not apply to the service location Uppsala. Take the chance to see some part of our long country that you haven't been to yet!

We have a particularly high need for substitutes during weeks 28-31, but we prefer that you work six to eight weeks.
