About the Department

The Department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, Lund University of Technology (LTH), is unique in covering the entire technology stack for telecommunications systems – from wireless hardware and radio systems to distributed cloud platforms and applications.

This broad competence enables research that seamlessly integrates communication systems, computing platforms, connected applications, and secure systems. The Department of Security and Network Systems works broadly with research in network systems, applied AI/ML, data security, and cryptography. The department drives several research projects through various large collaboration platforms and organizes extensive workshops and seminar series, making the research at the department visible to a larger audience. Interdisciplinary projects are shaped through our research collaboration platforms as well as national and international research networks, contributing to a dynamic research environment.

Being a PhD Student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently with the help of the right methodological choices, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, you are given the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your pedagogical abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Subject and Project Description

Through ELLIIT, we now offer a new PhD position in the area of connected applications with cloud-based AI and control systems. ELLIIT is a strategic research environment funded by the Swedish government since 2010, as part of its initiative to support strong research in information technology and mobile communication. More about ELLIIT (elliit.se).

The position is also part of NextG2Com – a Vinnova competence center coordinated by Lund University. NextG2Com is a competence center for future advanced communication systems that integrate wireless communication technology and networks, software, data, and security through relevant application areas (advanced digitization).

In NextG2Com, Lund University collaborates with industry and public actors with support from Vinnova. As a PhD student within NextG2Com, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with industry partners and other PhD students within the center, participate in meetings and various center activities. You will work in the ELLIIT project “Safety-critical Intelligent Machines with cloud-assisted AI and control,” which includes collaboration with Linköping University. The first part of the project will investigate cloud-based control systems with strict real-time requirements and safety requirements, primarily for robotics applications. The second part of the project will explore systems for cloud-based ML inference with strict real-time requirements. The third part of the project will investigate cloud-based computations of AI and control systems based on hyper-distributed cloud platforms developed for next-generation communication and computing infrastructures. A central part of the project will be to develop a real-time-based experimental platform that includes a complete network-based application based on available research infrastructure at Lund University, such as the 5G lab and LTH Robotics Lab. Job Responsibilities

You will primarily focus on your PhD education, which includes participation in research projects as well as PhD courses, seminars, and conferences.

The job responsibilities include:

• Research in the subject area.
• Conducting PhD courses within the framework of the PhD subject.
• Contributing to joint activities within ELLIIT and NextG2Com.
• Your responsibilities also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (but max 20% of working time).
