"There is a nerve in our job," says Jonas, who has been a systems safety engineer at BAE Systems Bofors since 2017 and is now the head of systems safety and configuration management. "What we do plays a crucial role in ensuring that the systems function as they should.”.
About the position
The work at BAE Systems Bofors is project-based, and as a systems safety engineer, you will be involved in several different projects simultaneously. A large part of the job involves identifying risks with the product, analyzing them, and ensuring they are minimized. "We perform various types of analyses and compile information from many different sources. It is important to keep track of everything from legal requirements to technical details," explains Josephine. "Our job is to ensure that all requirements are met. Ultimately, it is about minimizing the risk of harm to the user, the product, or the environment." This is a job that requires both technical competence and a strong sense of responsibility. "You have to be willing to speak up when something is not safe enough," explains Josephine. "We have a responsibility to ensure that no risks are overlooked."
And that responsibility gives the work an extra dimension. "Knowing that what we do actually plays such a significant role, that is what makes the job meaningful," continues Josephine. "It is one thing to work with technology, but when you know that your work directly contributes to protecting people – then the job becomes something much bigger."
No two days are alike
Despite the high demands and great responsibility, both Jonas and Josephine describe the work environment as positive and supportive. "We are a good team, and that is important when working with such critical issues as we do," says Jonas. "We trust each other and strive towards the same goals."
Entering the role of systems safety engineer at BAE Systems Bofors does not require you to have worked with systems safety before, but a broad technical background and a strong interest in technology are important. "We all have different backgrounds, but what we have in common is our passion for working with complex technology that controls large energies that can potentially cause serious accidents," says Josephine. "You will receive the training you need on-site, and we continuously learn from each other."
