Department of Molecular Sciences

SLU is seeking a research specialist for a position focused on processing methods and physico-chemical properties of plant-based foods. The successful candidate will work at the Department of Molecular Sciences, SLU, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary research center PAN Sweden, PAN Sweden (https://www.oru.se/strategiska-satsningar/mat-och-halsa/pan-sweden). The project aims to clarify the relationships between processing conditions, the microstructure of food ingredients, in relation to sensory properties and health effects.

About the Job

The applicant should have a solid background in structural characterization of materials, such as proteins, starch, and dietary fiber. Additionally, knowledge of mechanical and rheological characterization is advantageous. Knowledge of food technology (gel formation, emulsification, 3D printing, fermentation, etc.) is desirable. Understanding the structural properties of food and techniques to study them is central to the job. Skills in microscopy (light, confocal, electron) and rheology, along with an understanding of human nutrition and physiology, will be beneficial. Personal qualities such as a sense of responsibility and the ability to independently perform tasks as part of a research team will be valued. Valuable experiences and skills include experimental laboratory work, scientific writing skills, and the ability to work on interdisciplinary projects. Previous experience in the food industry is advantageous.

The research specialist position is a career-developing role for early-career researchers, and we are primarily looking for candidates who have a PhD that is no more than 3 years old.

The Department of Molecular Sciences, SLU, Uppsala consists of approximately 100 employees and forms an inspiring research environment at BioCentrum on the Ultuna campus in Uppsala, together with three other departments.
