About the Department

The Department of Solid State Physics is part of the Department of Materials Science at Ångström Laboratory. At the department, we work with both fundamental and applied research. The research is related to energy and environmental issues, as well as to biotechnological applications within our various research areas. We primarily investigate the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and new materials, which can be used for thin films for smart windows, to develop gas sensors, photocatalytic coatings, and spintronics, or for biomagnetic applications and new magnetic materials for green energy technology.

Project Description

The project involves the synthesis of new nanomaterials (ferrites) and studying their magnetic and dielectric properties. Chemical methods such as sol-gel synthesis are used to synthesize nanoparticles and nanocomposites. Crystal structure and chemical composition are determined through X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Magnetic properties are studied with SQUID and VSM magnetometers, and dielectric properties with LCR meters, impedance analyzers, and other electronics.

The research is conducted in collaboration with the “Nanostructured Magnetic Materials Laboratory” led by Prof. Davide Peddis, University of Genova, Italy, as well as with other local and international collaborators.

Job Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the synthesis of nanoparticles and nanocomposites, as well as structural, magnetic, and dielectric characterization. The project includes the collection of experimental data, analysis and discussion, as well as communication of research results through scientific articles.

You are expected to work safely and independently in a laboratory environment and to work effectively in a large multidisciplinary group of chemists and materials scientists.

Qualifications

  • PhD in physics or a related field.
  • Demonstrated and documented knowledge and experience in chemical synthesis, magnetic and dielectric measurements.
  • Excellent experimental skills in SQUID magnetometry and dielectric spectroscopy.
  • Experience with X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.
  • Expertise in programming for data analysis or instrument control.

We require good oral and written skills in English as well as excellent knowledge of scientific writing.

Desirable/meritorious

Particular emphasis is placed on experience in the collection and advanced analysis of magnetic and dielectric data on nanomaterials.

We place great importance on personal suitability and are looking for a motivated researcher who takes great responsibility and is proactive. You are self-driven in your work and have good collaborative skills.

Your application should include:

  • A short letter describing yourself, why you are interested in this project, and why you are suitable for this position.
  • CV (max 2 pages).
  • Copy of PhD, master's degree (or equivalent) and course grades.
  • Publication list. Highlight the most relevant publications for the position and comment on what you contributed to these publications.
  • Names and contact details of at least two people who have agreed to be references for you. It should also be clear what relationship you have had with each referee.

We will continuously read applications and invite candidates for interviews during the application period.

About the Employment

The position is temporary for 4 months. The extent is 100%. Start date 2026-02-16 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
