PhD Position in Multicatalysis with Metal-Organic Frameworks
Kemikum, with over 200 employees, is one of the largest institutions at Stockholm University.
Research at Kemikum spans all areas of chemistry including analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry, as well as organic chemistry. The research projects are numerous, ranging from theory to experiments, from pure basic research to more applied projects often focusing on sustainable chemistry, as well as advanced analytical methods for chemicals and materials. Kemikum has a well-developed research infrastructure with a variety of equipment and qualified support from staff researchers.
Kemikum also hosts the chemistry education at the undergraduate level and three master's programs; analytical chemistry, sustainable chemistry, and organic chemistry. Doctoral education is conducted in five areas; analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry.

Research Subject
Multicatalysis with Metal-Organic Frameworks
Supervisor: Assistant Professor Miguel Rivero-Crespo
A PhD position is offered in Professor M. Rivero-Crespo's research group at Stockholm University. The PhD student will work on the synthesis and characterization of multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The catalysts will be used in catalytic applications, particularly for multicatalysis in reactions involving aerobic oxidations and other transformations. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining organic chemistry, materials science, and catalysis. Sustainability will be one of the main pillars of the project. The development of more efficient catalysts, with minimized use of energy and resources and reduced waste generation, which in turn decreases the environmental impact of chemical production, is particularly sought after.
The main tasks include: 1) Synthesis and characterization of heterogeneous catalysts based on porous materials. 2) Study of their catalytic activity in organic reactions. 3) In-situ and/or operando investigations. 4) Comparison with benchmark homogeneous systems.
Eligibility Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the application deadline.
You have basic eligibility if you have completed a degree at the advanced level, or have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.
For specific eligibility, according to the general study plan for doctoral education in organic chemistry, the applicant must have completed an independent project (thesis) of at least 30 hp at the advanced level in a subject area relevant to the doctoral education subject (organic chemistry) with a passing grade.
Selection
Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include:
- documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area
- analytical and creative thinking
- initiative
- independence
- collaboration skills
- ability to express oneself in spoken and written English.
