Data Steward for the Research Data Group
Stockholm University is a driving force in the transition to open science and offers a relevant and high-quality research infrastructure with active efforts for national and regional collaboration in the field.
The University Library is an infrastructure within Stockholm University with a broad range of activities and a diversity of services that are at the forefront in several areas – including open science.
In the spring, Stockholm University will strengthen its organization for research data management through local data stewards at each institution. The Research Data Group has been tasked with developing this function, where the first step will be a pilot with five institutions. The local data stewards will serve as contact points to the central research data group.
The University Library is structured in an agile network organization with self-organizing groups where the right competencies and abilities are included with the mandate to drive development, both now and in the future. For the Research Data Group, this means a shared responsibility for the whole with individual responsibility for different parts, to provide the best service and services to the university's researchers.
We are now looking for a data steward who wants to be part of the Research Data Group. You will play a central role in the daily work and actively contribute to developing the operations forward. More information about us can be found at: University Library (https://www.su.se/enheter/stockholms-universitetsbibliotek).
Job Responsibilities
As part of the Research Data Group, you will work in an environment characterized by strong commitment and high ambitions, while we also value a healthy balance between work and private life.
Currently, five data stewards work in the research data group together with expertise from the archive function. We have close collaboration with other specialists in open science, ethics, law, research data, IT, and information security.
As a data steward, you will support researchers and doctoral students in the proper management of research data, in accordance with the FAIR principles and the university's policy for open science. You will work closely with researchers at the institutions and contribute to meeting their needs and strengthening their skills through training, institutional meetings, webinars, and other communication.
To succeed in this role, you need to have a good technical understanding combined with knowledge of the regulations surrounding research data. You are pedagogical and communicative, with the ability to adapt your support to the needs of the target audience.
The work also includes monitoring the research data area and, based on user needs, being proactive in developing relevant solutions for researchers' work with management, storage, description, sharing, publishing, and preservation of research data.
Qualifications
For the position, it is necessary that you have:
- completed a doctoral degree or otherwise acquired an understanding of the conditions of research, with a focus on experience in handling large data
- knowledge of research data management within various research methods
- interest in making research data accessible to increase the transparency, reproducibility, and reusability of research
- good communication skills, both written and spoken. You are expected to communicate in Swedish and English, or be willing to learn as part of your employment.
It is advantageous if you have:
- pedagogical competence, or experience and interest in teaching
- familiarity with publishing platforms for research data and interest in preparing research data for publication
- knowledge of metadata, metadata standards, and file formats used for research data publication
- experience in programming (e.g., BASH, Python) and familiarity with source code used in databases (e.g., XML, JSON)
- interest in developing tools for data management that are future-proof (AI, data protection, big data).
As a person, you are self-driven, responsive, and service-oriented, with a good ability to see the whole and connections. You find it easy to collaborate, can share your knowledge, and have good social skills. You need to be structured and efficient in your work approach and accustomed to prioritizing, as you will be involved in larger and smaller projects alongside ongoing work. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.
