Department of Plant Breeding

We are looking for a dedicated and meticulous individual to join our plant biotechnology department as a research assistant.

About the Job

The person we are seeking will perform and develop experimental work in various research projects. The tasks will vary and include plant tissue culture as well as molecular biological and metabolic analyses. Daily work will involve participation in the development and execution of genome editing and transformation of plants. Additionally, molecular biological methods such as PCR, qPCR, nucleotide sequence processing, marker and fragment analyses, and other analytical methods will be included. Some greenhouse and fieldwork may also be part of the employment.

Your Background

To qualify for this position, you need to have an education as a biomedical analyst, or a degree in biology or chemistry at the bachelor’s or master’s level. Experience in practical work within molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or tissue culture is advantageous. The applicant should be service-oriented, and great importance will be placed on analytical ability, flexibility, independence, and teamwork skills. We highly value experience in managing technical equipment as well as organizational and ordering processes. Excellent knowledge of Swedish and English is required.

About Us

SLU's Department of Plant Breeding (VF), located in Alnarp (near Lund and Malmö, in Skåne, southern Sweden), focuses on research, education, and innovation work of strategic importance for sustainable and profitable crop cultivation for the production of plant-based food, feed, and industrial products in a changing climate. The department is a recognized multidisciplinary, innovative, and creative research institute that addresses current and future challenges. The department comprises about 100 employees, including professors, associate professors, researchers, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral students, and support staff. It is organized into three divisions: plant breeding, plant biotechnology, and plant product quality. Research efforts encompass both basic and applied research. VF employs a wide range of techniques – from field experiments and characterization of agricultural biodiversity to genetics, genomics, biotechnology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, physiology, and modeling. As an integral part of its operations, the department also conducts two public plant breeding programs in apple and potato.
