Department of Forest Ecology and Management
We are looking for a motivated researcher who can independently develop research on plant functional traits, root ecology, and their significance for plant-soil interactions and soil carbon cycling in boreal forests.
About the job
The tasks include the following, and the candidate should have competence and experience in these areas.
- Independently develop and lead research on plant functional traits, root ecology, and their impact on plant-soil interactions and soil carbon cycling in boreal forests.
- Publish research results in high-quality scientific journals.
- Develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, relevant authorities, industry, organizations, and society at large.
- Develop, lead, and participate in teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
- Actively participate in seminars and other activities in the department.
- Present research results at workshops, conferences, and research seminars.
- Apply for external research funding.
- Contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU.
Your background
The applicant must meet the following qualification requirements:
- PhD in biology with a focus on plant-soil interactions.
- Documented experience in publishing research on plant functional traits in high-impact journals, as well as teaching competence and the ability to integrate research into teaching.
- Good knowledge of English and Swedish.
- Should have expertise in fine root traits, plant-soil interactions, root exudation, working under axenic conditions, and experience in fieldwork.
Evaluation criteria
The primary consideration in the assessment criteria for employment should be the competence level required to be eligible for the position. The assessment of the eligible applicant's suitability for the position will primarily be based on:
- Completed and ongoing research in the subject area.
- Ability to independently initiate and conduct successful/outstanding research.
- Supervision and examination of candidate or master's students.
- Experience in teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
- Collaboration with relevant stakeholders and society.
- Communicating research results and developments.
It is considered an advantage if the applicant has competence in fine root trait research, root exudation, and plant-soil interactions.

The researcher will be employed at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU. SLU has an international character in both research and teaching. The department consists of approximately 115 people, of which 9 are professors. Our mission is to promote a greater understanding of forest ecosystems and how forest ecosystems can best be managed today and in the future.
