Unit for Forest Field Research

The Unit for Forest Field Research was established in 2004. It belongs to the Faculty of Forest Research and has its administrative seat at Svartberget in Vindeln, with field research stations at three additional locations in the country: Siljansfors, Asa, and Tönnersjöheden. The unit is responsible for the management and development of eight experimental parks, from Ätnarova in the north to Skarhult in the south, where the Siljansfors experimental park in Dalarna also manages the Jädraås experimental park in Gästrikland. In addition to the experimental parks, the unit is responsible for the establishment, operation, and maintenance of approximately 1,600 forest field trials, a large part of which are located outside the experimental parks, where the Siljansfors experimental park is responsible for trials in Svealand and southern Norrland.

The unit also conducts extensive ongoing environmental analysis, e.g., measuring reference climate, phenological observations, environmental monitoring in various catchment areas, as well as monitoring greenhouse gases, primarily at or in connection with the experimental parks. The unit also has a comprehensive information and excursion activity and is part of the forest education at SLU.

About the Job

As a research assistant focusing on forest field trials, you will, together with the park manager and those responsible for long-term field trials and projects within the Unit for Forest Field Research, work with and lead fieldwork at the Siljansfors experimental park and on selected trial sites that SLU is responsible for within the Siljansfors operational area (across Svealand and southern Norrland). The majority of the working hours will be spent in the field. The work includes, among other things:

  • planning and supervising fieldwork
  • establishment, maintenance, and measurement of forest field trials
  • sampling, measurements, and observations in trials and areas for environmental monitoring
  • other maintenance and upkeep work within the experimental park

Your Background

We are looking for someone who is interested in working with practical fieldwork at a forest field research station, in the experimental park, and at other locations where the experimental park is responsible for field trial activities. You should genuinely enjoy working outdoors throughout the employment period and also be comfortable with routine tasks. You must be able to work independently and with a good level of accuracy, but also supervise other employees in the fieldwork. You should also be able to express yourself clearly in both speech and writing. Furthermore, you must have a B driver's license. You need to have a higher forestry education to understand and make decisions, in consultation with the park manager and other responsible individuals within the unit, regarding measures and maintenance of scientific field trials. It is highly meritorious if you have previous experience working with the establishment and maintenance of forest field trials and sampling and environmental monitoring activities in forest environments. It is also advantageous if you are used to working with data reporting in field computers, data loggers, etc.
