Research Engineer in Mobile Mapping

VTI, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, is a government agency conducting applied research and qualified investigations in the transport field. We have about 250 employees and an annual turnover of around 300 million SEK. The main office is located in Linköping, with additional offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Lund.

Society faces significant challenges, where both the climate and global conditions affect how we need to work and prepare. Road maintenance is entering an expansive phase, with the government announcing an almost doubling of the budget for road maintenance over a five-year period, which presents both great opportunities and significant demands for research and development of innovative strategies and methods for maintenance planning. Road infrastructure is a crucial node in the transitions that need to be made, and you will find yourself at the heart of this transition.

We are seeking new employees for the Operations and Maintenance unit to strengthen the team working with road area measurements and road maintenance. In the unit, we research how roads behave under various climate conditions, with different types of traffic loads and materials. We investigate what causes cracks, potholes, rutting, and other types of road damage, and how we should build and maintain roads to minimize the impact that climate has on them. Much of our research is based on data from our newly acquired measurement vehicle, which collects high-resolution information about the road surface at the millimeter level using the latest road surface measurement technology. In addition to road surface measurement technology, the vehicle is also equipped with Lidar and a 360-degree camera, allowing us to see details in the road's surroundings through point cloud data. This means we now need to build our competence in mobile mapping.

As an employee with us, you will have the opportunity to contribute to research that makes a direct difference in society by participating in innovative research projects together with our partners at universities, consulting firms, contractors, and the Swedish Transport Administration, not only in Sweden but also in Europe.

Your primary workplace will be Linköping, where research equipment and laboratories are located. The workplace can be discussed.

About the Role

We are looking for an employee who can build our area of expertise in mobile mapping by initiating and driving projects based on road area measurements, while also verifying and further developing the technology together with colleagues at VTI and our partners.

We offer a flexible and varied job where days of measurement with our newly acquired and highly modern road surface measurement vehicle alternate with data processing, interpretation and analysis, method development, and automation, preferably with the help of AI, to create new knowledge and contribute to world-leading research.

The work as a research engineer requires a self-driven person who enjoys collaborating with colleagues and partners to identify research and development needs that can then be implemented. The job also includes staying updated on the latest research and technological developments in the field. You will work both individually and together with others, maintaining close and open communication with colleagues and clients. You will have the opportunity to work on both national and international projects and with various collaborative organizations.

About You

We are looking for someone educated as a technical surveyor or measurement engineer, or another relevant university background, or equivalent experience from the workforce.

You have previous experience in mobile mapping, that is, mobile collection and data processing of laser-scanned point clouds and images for road engineering applications. You should be familiar with positioning calculations, georeferencing, and quality assurance of measurement data.

It is advantageous to have good knowledge in interpreting and processing point clouds and images using Terrasolids products under Bentley's Microstation (or similar products), databases (SQL), as well as streamlining and data refinement of point clouds and images through method development, automation, and AI. Knowledge of programming (Matlab, Python, etc.), GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.) is also seen as positive. Previous experience in road surface measurement and/or road area measurement and analysis of the data collected from such measurements is also advantageous.

You may have previously worked with mobile mapping from a consulting perspective but are now looking for an opportunity to deepen and develop your knowledge of road conditions in various research projects. Work at VTI is project-driven, and therefore there is an opportunity to shape projects based on areas of interest, allowing you to develop both yourself and the field based on needs, interests, and curiosity.

You are a self-driven person with experience in compiling, analyzing, and presenting material and measurement data, and are grounded in relevant theoretical frameworks and methodologies. You have an easy time collaborating and a good ability to express yourself both in writing and verbally, in Swedish and English. The ability to take initiative and work independently is a requirement, while being flexible and able to create a network is essential.

A driver's license (B) is required for the position.
