Job Advertisement: Researcher in Road Surface Measurement

VTI, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, is a government agency conducting applied research and qualified investigations in the transport sector. We have approximately 250 employees and an annual turnover of around 300 million SEK. The main office is located in Linköping, with additional offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Lund.

Society faces significant challenges, where both climate and global conditions affect how we need to work and prepare. Road infrastructure is a crucial node in the transitions that need to be made, and you will find yourself right in the middle of this transition. Road maintenance is currently in an expansive phase, which both presents great opportunities and imposes significant demands on research and the development of innovative strategies and methods for maintenance planning.

We are looking for new employees to strengthen the team working with road area measurements, road surface measurements, and road maintenance in the Operations and Maintenance unit. The unit researches how roads behave under different climate conditions, with various traffic loads and different types of materials. We investigate what causes cracks, potholes, rutting, and other types of road damage to occur and how we should build and maintain roads to minimize the impact that climate, among other factors, has on the roads. With our measurement vehicle, we collect high-resolution information about the road surface at the millimeter level using the latest technology for road surface measurement, and Lidar and 360-degree cameras allow us to see details in the road's surroundings in point cloud data.

As an employee with us, you will have the opportunity to contribute to research that makes a direct difference in society by participating in innovative and groundbreaking research projects together with our partners at universities, consulting firms, contractors, and the Swedish Transport Administration, not only in Sweden but also in Europe.

About the Role

We are looking for someone who wants variety in their work, who can imagine being out measuring with our newly purchased and highly modern road surface measurement vehicle, sometimes for several days in a row, and alternating that with data processing as well as interpretation and analysis, preferably with the help of AI, to create new knowledge and contribute to world-leading research. The work includes staying updated on the latest research and technological developments in the field. You will work both individually and collaboratively with others, maintaining close and open communication with colleagues and clients. You will have the opportunity to work on both national and international projects and with various collaborative organizations.

About You

We are looking for someone with a Master's degree or equivalent in natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, or another relevant field, or equivalent experience from the workforce.

If you have previous experience in road surface measurement and/or road area measurement and analysis of the data collected from such measurements, it is an advantage. Likewise, if you have good knowledge of data processing, databases (SQL), programming (Matlab, Python, etc.), GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.), and the ability to interpret and process point cloud data from Lidar.

You may have previously worked with road surface measurement from a consulting perspective but are now seeking the opportunity to deepen and develop your knowledge of road conditions in various research projects. Work at VTI is project-driven, and therefore there is an opportunity to shape projects based on areas of interest, which allows for personal and professional development based on needs, interests, and curiosity.

You are a self-motivated person who enjoys collaborating with colleagues and partners to identify research and development needs that can then be implemented. You should be able to independently compile, analyze, and present material and measurement data in report format and be grounded in relevant theoretical frameworks and methodologies. You need to have an easy time collaborating and a good ability to express yourself both in writing and verbally, in Swedish and English. The ability to take initiative and work independently is a requirement, while also being flexible and able to create networks.

A driver's license (B) is required for the position.
