The School of Music in Piteå is a small conservatory in the coastal city of Piteå, a place where nature is close at hand. The School of Music educates musicians in diverse genres. Internationally recognized artistic research on music performance is conducted in collaboration with other research institutions in Europe and the United States.
The School of Music is seeking a dynamic choral conductor and pedagogue whose primary responsibilities are to teach choral conducting to bachelor’s and master’s degree students as well as to direct and develop the school’s choral program, including the School of Music’s Chamber Choir.
Duties
Senior lecturers are involved in education, educational development, and research at the university. Senior lecturers are expected to contribute to the university's development, to contribute to obtaining external funding to the subject, and to participate in managerial and administrative tasks. Senior lecturers in artistic subjects should also continue their own artistic development and/or participate in research projects. Results should be disseminated through publications or artistic projects. University lecturers should continue to be active in their own artistic fields.
As a senior lecturer at the School of Music, you will primarily be responsible for teaching choral conducting. Students are composed from the Bachelor of Music in church music program as well as the Master of Arts in conducting degree programs. You will also teach conducting to students in other programs and as well as non-degree courses in conducting.
Conducting the School of Music’s chamber choir and teaching choral conducting today constitute a position which is 50% of full-time. The possibility of expanding the position exists depending on the applicant’s interest and skills. The position can be expanded through teaching in one or more of the following subjects:
- Organ, repertoire playing and/or service playing
- Classical voice
- Music theory and aural skills/ear training
- Music history
- Piano
The position also includes administration and collaborative projects, including responsibility for leading the choirs in the school of music’s annual Christmas concert.
Qualifications
To meet the requirements for employment as a senior lecturer in the disciplines in fine, applied, or performing arts, the applicant:
- must have artistic competence corresponding to a doctoral degree or must have completed a doctoral degree relevant to the position;
- must be established and well reputed nationally as an artistic practician and/or researcher, where the requirement of acquisition of qualifications is to be assessed in view of the nature and customs of the subject specialisation.
- must demonstrate teaching expertise through proven experience, teaching ability, and the development of course structure and teaching methods;
- must have completed higher education pedagogy courses equivalent to 7.5 higher education credits or otherwise must have acquired corresponding knowledge.
Assessment criteria
The following assessment criteria apply to this position:
- documented artistic expertise, through quality of work, recognition, artistic education, experience, and productivity;
- documented pedagogical expertise, for example documented teaching experience, and pedagogical development;
- other assessment criteria.
Other assessment criteria (equal weight given to all criteria):
- degree of expertise which qualifies the applicant for the position;
- ability to communicate in a Scandinavian language;
- ability to teach in English;
- ability to contribute to the continued development of the school of music;
- ability to work collaboratively, administrate, as well as to be physically present at the school;
- ability to develop a presence in the musical life of the region.
Great emphasis will be placed on your personal qualities.

The position consists of an initial 5-year contract renewable for an additional 5 years. The primary workplace is in Piteå. The position is 50% of full-time but can be expanded.
