Today's and Tomorrow's Electricity Prices in Sweden

November 16, 2024, has proven to be an interesting day for electricity prices in Sweden. During the early morning hours, electricity prices have been negative, meaning that consumers actually get paid to use electricity. This phenomenon is not uncommon during periods of high production and low demand.

Free Electricity During the Night

During the night, from midnight until 8:00 AM, electricity prices have been negative, which means it costs nothing to bathe, shower, charge the car, or play games during the cheapest hour of the day. This provides a unique opportunity for consumers to take advantage of cheap or even free electricity for energy-intensive activities.

Electricity Prices During the Day

After 9:00 AM, electricity prices start to rise slightly but remain very low until the afternoon. It is only at 3:00 PM that prices reach 2 cents per kWh, which is still relatively low compared to what many are used to. At 5:00 PM, electricity prices peak at 13 cents per kWh, making this the most expensive hour of the day.

Electricity Prices Tomorrow

For November 17, 2024, electricity prices are expected to start low, with prices barely above zero during the early morning hours. However, from 10:00 AM onwards, prices rise rapidly and peak between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM at a price of 27 cents per kWh. This represents a significant increase compared to today's prices.

Curious Facts and Interesting Information

During the cheapest hour today, it is not only free to use electricity, but one actually gets paid. For example, charging an electric car during this hour would result in an "income" of 124 cents, based on a 60 kWh charge. Taking a bath would give back 12 cents, and playing games on a computer would yield 1 cent.

Costs During the Most Expensive Hour

During the most expensive hour today, at 5:00 PM, it costs 16 kronor to charge an electric car and 160 cents to take a bath. Although these prices are higher, they are still relatively low compared to many other days throughout the year.

Annual Heating Cost

If we had the lowest electricity price all year round, it would have cost -372 kronor to heat a medium-sized house of 160 sqm, based on an annual energy consumption of 18,000 kWh. During the most expensive hour, this cost would have been 4,810 kronor.

This variation in electricity prices offers consumers an opportunity to adjust their electricity usage to maximize savings. It is an excellent opportunity to plan energy-intensive activities during the cheapest hours and save significantly on the electricity bill.
