The Swedish Armed Forces have a strong value base built on openness, results, and responsibility. Professional development and personal health are valued and encouraged. There are good conditions for internal career mobility, wellness programs, and a good balance between work and private life.

Main Responsibilities

As a Navy Chaplain, you will lead, be responsible for, and develop military spiritual care within Haninge Garrison, Stockholm Amphibious Regiment (Amf 1), and the 4th Naval Warfare Flotilla, while being responsive to the unit's needs. Spiritual care is part of personnel care, which may involve holding memorial ceremonies, conducting training, participating in values-based work, providing guidance on life stance issues, and offering comfort and strength in an individual's life situation. The role also involves contributing to next-of-kin support, including collaboration with the Naval Home or similar entities. Participation in certain further education days and adequate training designated by the unit is required.

For the part of the position located in the Haninge Pastorate as an assistant pastor, there are good opportunities to influence the direction. Primarily, standard pastoral duties are in focus. Västerhaninge-Muskö Parish is the main base for the assistant pastor position.

The role also involves:

  • Participating in exercises (anchoring with the parish is important).
  • Potentially joining a crisis management group.
  • Understanding the importance of collaboration and networking, viewing this as a "living" assignment that must always be optimized and updated.
  • Maintaining close cooperation with the pastorate and other religious communities, and further maintaining close cooperation with military chaplains within the military region.
  • Reintroducing and integrating knowledge into the pastorate to increase understanding and awareness of the mission and function.
  • Being responsible for collaboration with other religious communities and identifying any needs for support from other faith representatives.
  • Ensuring collaboration with the pastorate and diocese, among other things, in the building of the Total Defence.
  • Being aware that wartime posting occurs.
  • Participating in regular collaboration meetings.
  • Coordinating military spiritual care based on directives from the unit commander and the field provost.
  • Developing materials for the development of spiritual care at the unit.
  • Contributing to the development of total defence capability.

Requirements for the position:

  • Ordained as a priest within the Church of Sweden.
  • Well-rooted in your priestly identity (priest, not soldier).
  • Security classified by the Swedish Armed Forces. Approved security clearance is required to work at the unit.
  • Swedish citizenship.
  • B-driver's license.

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Preferably previous experience of institutional spiritual care, such as hospital chaplaincy, police, or university, with at least 5 years of parish experience.
  • Previous experience from the Swedish Armed Forces is not a requirement, but understanding and respect for the context in which you will serve is very important, hence adequate training must be completed (e.g., GSU INT).
  • Knowledge of military spiritual care.

Personal Qualities:

It is assumed that you are well-rooted in your priestly identity and thus aware of your own limitations, responsibilities, and obligations. You have high social competence, are trustworthy, and responsive to the unit's needs. High adaptability is requested. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

For the agency's mission to be successful, it is assumed that everyone acts according to the existing value base. The Swedish Armed Forces' value base protects the equal value of all people, fairness, and equality, and promotes democracy and human rights (read more at forsvarsmakten.se (https://www.forsvarsmakten.se)).

The position may involve conducting business trips, participating in training and exercises in wartime organization.
