About the workplace

The County Administrative Board is a driving force for a sustainable society. We work together with authorities, municipalities, businesses, and other actors with a focus on Västra Götaland County and its 1.7 million inhabitants. The County Administrative Board has a broad range of activities and plays a very important role in several areas of society. This includes, not least, the highly current challenges of regional growth, implementing the green transition, developing civil defence, and nurturing democracy.

The County Administrative Board is a regional state authority with approximately 1,000 pleasant and competent employees. We have operations in several locations in Västra Götaland, as well as elsewhere in Sweden, as we are responsible for the IT operations for all County Administrative Boards.

We are now seeking practical nature conservationists for the Nature and Water Department

The Nature and Water Department has the mandate to strengthen biodiversity and outdoor recreation.

The nature management function works with nature-conserving maintenance and outdoor recreation within protected nature. In Västra Götaland County, there are around 580 nature reserves, of which 180 are managed by the County Administrative Board in the eastern part of the county. In addition to nature reserves, there are another 100 or so protected areas that we work actively with throughout the county, such as national parks and Natura 2000 sites. Here lies a rich and varied natural and cultural landscape with table mountains, beautiful coastal areas along Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern, calcareous hay meadows, valuable bird lakes, and grazing lands. We collaborate with the West Coast Foundation, which manages other state-owned nature reserves in the county, as well as with municipalities regarding municipal reserves.

Twenty people work in this function, both nature managers and practical nature conservationists. Our practical work team consists of approximately 5 people who work within the geographical area of Skaraborg, on behalf of management colleagues.

Job Description

The tasks vary throughout the year. During autumn and winter, tasks include marking the boundaries of nature reserves and restoring grazing lands through clearing and tree felling. In spring, we work with scrubbing, grass burning, maintenance, and measures for outdoor recreation. In summer, mowing of meadows is the dominant task.

The tasks involve handling both motorized tools and hand tools.

The workplace is located at Hornborgasjön near Broddetorp, where we primarily have machinery and equipment. However, you will work in other protected areas in the eastern part of the county. One week you might be mowing and clearing on Kinnekulle, and the next week you will be marking the boundaries of a forest reserve in Tidaholm. This means that rarely is one day like the other, and you will experience many beautiful natural places in your work.

Qualifications

Requirements:

• Good physical fitness
• Brush cutter license level RA
• Chainsaw license level AB
• Category B driver's license for passenger car
• Good knowledge of Swedish

Merits:

It is meritorious if you have education in practical nature conservation or landscape care. Practical experience in common nature conservation work such as clearing, tree felling, meadow management, and maintenance of outdoor recreation facilities is also meritorious, as is practical manual skills, especially regarding machinery. Carpenter skills, basic species knowledge, and Category BE driver's license are also considered merits.

Personal qualities:

This position suits you if you are interested in nature conservation and enjoy working physically outdoors in all weather. To thrive, you need to enjoy working together with others in a small work team with a supervisor. You also need to be physically enduring and comfortable performing your tasks independently as part of the whole.

To succeed in the role, you need to have good judgment, be enduring, and able to complete both heavy and solitary tasks, both physically and mentally. You need to be flexible in the role and able to handle changes in work planning with short notice. You are self-reliant, completing assigned tasks or taking initiative. Since you will meet many people in your work, it is important to have an understanding of the County Administrative Board's mission and to be a good representative of the authority.

You have a healthy attitude towards work, which is evident in how you plan and complete joint assignments. As a person, you focus on opportunities rather than obstacles.
