The Swedish National Heritage Board is Sweden's authority for matters concerning cultural heritage. We work to ensure that cultural environments, cultural landscapes, cultural objects, and museums are preserved, used, and developed. Our mandate is guided by the government's goals for cultural policy and state cultural heritage work. Our operations are located in Visby, Stockholm, and Tumba, and we also run public activities at the visitor site Glimmingehus. We have approximately 250 employees.

We are now looking for a Head of Department for the Museum Division to drive and strengthen our important work in promoting development and collaboration in the museum sector and within the cultural heritage industry. The Division's mandate includes responsibility for developing knowledge and support for museums in the areas of museums' societal relevance and regional development, management of cultural objects and collection management, as well as digital mediation and exhibition technology. The Division's mandate also includes responsibility for crisis preparedness, grant management, and issues related to illegal trade. It also includes responsibility for the operations at the authority's visitor site Glimmingehus and for providing certain museum services to cultural heritage managers.

The Museum Division consists of five units: The Unit for Museums in Society, The Unit for Collections and Cultural Objects, The Unit for Technology and Digital Mediation, the visitor site Glimmingehus, and Swedish Museum Services. The Head of Department leads the division's management group and is also a member of the authority's overall management group. Approximately 50 engaged and competent employees work in the division.

Your Responsibilities

Your task is to lead and develop the operations to achieve our goals. As Head of Department, you coordinate the division's units and mandates and have overall responsibility for operations, economy, and personnel. You drive the division's strategic development work and create conditions for a good work environment with an open collaborative climate where employees can develop.

Current areas of development include:

  • increasing the ability of cultural heritage actors to withstand threats and risks, prevent vulnerabilities, handle peacetime crisis situations, and perform tasks during heightened readiness
  • working for a digital transition where museums have an increased ability to contribute to a sustainable, useful, and visible cultural heritage
  • working to ensure that cultural heritage issues are used actively as a resource in regional development and that everyone in all parts of the country has equal opportunities to access cultural heritage
  • continuing to develop support for museums and cultural heritage actors in the area of sustainable collection management

As Head of Department, you also contribute to good collaboration with other departments and external partners. You are part of the authority's management group where you are expected to contribute to the development of the entire authority.

Your Qualifications

We are looking for you with a relevant university education in the field of cultural heritage or equivalent education deemed equal by the employer, as well as well-verified multi-year experience from the public sector or a cultural heritage actor. You have good knowledge of the museum and cultural heritage sector. You have multi-year managerial experience with personnel responsibility and use a developmental leadership style with a trust-based approach.

It is meritorious if you have good knowledge of and experience with preparedness and digitalization issues. It is also meritorious if you have previously been a manager of other managers.

You are clear, have personal maturity, dare to take a stand, and are confident in your decision-making. You are solution-oriented and approach your task from a holistic perspective with good problem-solving analytical skills. You drive and follow up on goals and results and have a professional and good attitude. To succeed, you have the ability to create engagement and participation, you are unpretentious, have good collaboration skills, and can inspire, motivate, and lead colleagues. You are keen to promote a good administrative and change culture, and your approach is well rooted in the state's value base. We place great importance on personal suitability.

Other Information

The employment is a permanent position with a 6-month probationary period. The location is Visby, and we offer the possibility of some remote work when operations allow. The division has operations in both Visby and Stockholm. Therefore, regular physical presence of the Head of Department at both locations will be required.
