About Bungemuseet
Bungemuseet is one of Sweden's finest and best-preserved open-air museums and welcomes around 12,000 visitors every year to a living journey through Gotlandic history.
The museum was founded in 1907 by schoolteacher Theodor Erlandsson, who with great commitment documented and saved threatened buildings and cultural environments. Inspired by Skansen in Stockholm, he created a seven-hectare area with about seventy culturally and historically important buildings, where the visitor on one and the same place can walk through centuries of Gotlandic daily life. Three complete farms from the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s form the core, complemented by picture stones, fishing village, charcoal kilns, sojde (traditional drying racks), mills and sawmills.
The company and the association are two parts of the same whole
Bungemuseet AB is responsible for the public operation of the museum and collaborates very closely with the association. The company is owned by Gotlands Museum and the Association of Cultural History Museum in Bunge.
The Association of Cultural History Museum in Bunge owns and manages all of the museum's buildings and objects. The association's voluntary workforce takes care of the long-term maintenance of buildings and also arranges traditional activities such as charcoal kilns, sojde and rope making, experiences that are an appreciated and living part of the museum's operations.
