About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation services, remand prisons, and prisoner transport.

The Umeå operational area includes the closed prison in Umeå, the open prison in Sörbyn, and the remand prison in Umeå. We are undergoing significant capacity expansion, and there is a lot happening in the operational area in terms of renovation and new construction. The largest professional group is prison officers, but healthcare professionals, administrative staff, educators, production managers, and others also work here. At the Sörbyn prison, inmates are engaged in labor market training, learning centers, various treatment programs, or work in the kitchen, carpentry, plant cultivation, textiles, etc. Sörbyn prison is an agricultural prison with grain cultivation and animal husbandry. At the Umeå prison, inmates are engaged in wood/industry, kitchen work, learning centers, and treatment programs. It is about a 10-minute walk from the nearest bus stop to the Umeå prison and remand prison, and Sörbyn prison is most easily reached by car. Staff parking is available at all units.

For those who want to be part of creating a daily life where cooking makes a difference. We are now looking for a cook on a fixed-term contract at the Sörbyn prison. The fixed-term contract runs until December 31st, with start date to be agreed upon.

Job Description

As a cook, you prepare meals for the inmates at the prisons and remand prison. The tasks include all typical large kitchen duties such as planning, purchasing, and preparing lunch and dinner. The duties also include cleaning the kitchen premises, dishwashing, and self-control in accordance with current legislation. Preparation of diet food and other special diets is also part of the role. The work is carried out in collaboration with other kitchen staff and personnel in other functions. An important part of the daily work involves mentoring inmates in the kitchen.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who is secure, stable, and self-aware. You are calm and controlled in stressful situations and collaborate well with others. You have good judgment and take responsibility for your tasks.

You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. We are looking for someone who has:

• Restaurant or large-scale catering education at the upper secondary level, or other education combined with experience that the Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
• Ability to express yourself well in speech and writing in Swedish
• Category B driver's license

The following are also meritorious:

• Experience working in a large kitchen
• Experience working with self-control procedures
• Experience working with special diets
• Relevant language skills

Working Hours: Daytime, weekend work may occur.
