Unit Manager for Stockholm School of Culture – Södermalm, Kungsholmen, Norra Innerstaden, or Hägersten Älvsjö Årsta

Stockholm – our capital city filled with millions of dreams, expectations, and ambitions. We work for everyone who lives here today and in the future. Now we are looking for you who want to think big, new, and different with us – for the people of Stockholm.

Culture is a vital part of Stockholm's nervous system and touches millions of people every year. At the Department of Culture, we work together to strengthen cultural life in Stockholm.

Stockholm School of Culture is in an exciting phase of development. We are developing our operations to reach more children and young people, broaden our offerings, and create an even more accessible and relevant school of culture across the entire city. As part of this, a major reorganization is now underway with the goal of creating even better conditions for leadership, collaboration, and operational development close to the activities.

We are now looking for four unit managers for Södermalm, Kungsholmen, Norra Innerstaden, and Hägersten Älvsjö Årsta. These are roles for you who thrive in development and change and are motivated by building operations together with others. You appreciate environments where working methods, collaboration, and structure continue to develop, and where you have the opportunity to influence both operations and future direction.

Welcome to us

The School of Culture operates throughout the city of Stockholm. In our world, culture is important. We need spaces for culture. Spaces where one can discover, develop, and express oneself. At Stockholm School of Culture, children and young people between the ages of 6 and 22 have this space. Here, they have the opportunity for creative activities in their free time in one of the school's many subjects within music, singing, theater, musicals, dance, circus, art, and media. Through various events, large and small, students can perform in front of an audience. Teaching takes place in our own premises as well as in schools and other external locations throughout Stockholm.

What we offer

We offer a leading position in an engaged operation where we value teamwork and a proactive attitude. You will be part of a larger change and development journey with the goal of broadening the School of Culture's operations, increasing participation numbers, and reaching underrepresented groups.

Furthermore, you are offered employment benefits such as competence development, fitness allowances, favorable flexible working hours, and opportunities for holiday exchange. Please read more about our benefits and what it is like to work as a manager in the City of Stockholm.

Your role

As a unit manager, you have overall responsibility for operations, economy, personnel, working environment, and premises within your unit. You lead, plan, and follow up on operations while playing a key role in further developing and shaping the operations forward.

Several parts of the School of Culture are in development, which means you need to thrive in building phases where working methods, collaboration, and structure continue to develop over time. The role suits you who are motivated by driving change, creating direction, and building long-term sustainable operations together with others.

The role involves responsibility for budget, staffing, scheduling, and resource planning in a daily life with many parallel issues and varying tasks. Financial accountability and the ability to prioritize and use resources in a sustainable and business-like manner are important parts of the assignment.

You are also responsible for collaboration with schools, district administrations, libraries, youth clubs, and other external partners. The role involves many contact points and requires good ability to navigate in a large and complex organization. You are part of the School of Culture's management group and report to the Area Manager.

Start dates occur continuously during autumn and winter 2026. For Södermalm and Kungsholmen, the wish is for the earliest possible start. For Norra Innerstaden and Hägersten Älvsjö Årsta, the units start on January 1, 2027, but starting before the new year is possible.

Your skills and experience

We are looking for you who have:

  • a university degree in, for example, pedagogy, culture, economics, or social sciences, or alternatively other education combined with experience that the employer considers equivalent
  • managerial experience with responsibility for operations, budget, personnel, and working environment
  • experience in pedagogical operations or operations directed at children and young people
  • experience in change and development work
  • experience working in complex organizations
  • good economic understanding and familiarity with administrative systems
  • very good knowledge of Swedish in speech and writing
  • good digital competence

It is meritorious if you have:

  • experience in leadership positions within the school system, for example, primary school, upper secondary school, or adult education
  • experience from a school of culture, study association, or similar organization
  • experience working in the public sector

You are accustomed to working in a goal- and result-oriented manner with a holistic view and have the ability to combine strategic thinking with close and present leadership in everyday life. You have experience leading change processes in an inclusive way that creates sustainable results. You perceive changes in the external world and take initiative for development. You can lead employees from a strong mission and user focus so that the unit develops a school of culture that is accessible and relevant.

As a person, you are clear, solution-oriented, and collaboration-focused. You lead with both courage and sensitivity and have the ability to create engagement and direction even during periods of change. You thrive in dynamic environments and find it easy to switch between strategic issues and the daily operations of the business. We place great importance on personal qualities and leadership skills.
