Technical Manager with a Focus on Sound Technology

The University of Art and Design is part of Umeå University's Faculty of Humanities and is located on the Artistic Campus. With approximately 75 students, about ten staff members, and a large number of guest lecturers, it is a dynamic and international environment. The University of Art and Design offers a 3-year Bachelor's program (BFA) and a 2-year Master's program (MFA). International contacts and exchanges are an important part of the education. Two or three summer courses are offered every summer. Artistic research has been conducted at the department for more than two decades and is an important area of development.

The University of Art and Design has a wide range of workshops such as plaster, wax, graphics, metal, wood, and clay workshops, as well as a foundry, photo lab, and sound studio. The workshops constitute an important learning environment and are highly accessible to students. The University of Art and Design is now seeking a Technical Manager with a focus on sound technology. The position is permanent and full-time, with a start date in August 2026 or as agreed.

Job Description

The role of Technical Manager with a focus on sound is central to the school's daily operations and involves managing, supporting, and coordinating practical, technical, and logistical functions that enable education, artistic production, and public art activities at the school. The work is broad and independent and takes place in close collaboration with students, teachers, technical staff, and external actors. The role requires a good understanding of artistic activities as well as the technical and material conditions on which the activities are based.

The duties include, among other things:

  • handling purchases and coordinating deliveries, transports, contacts with suppliers, property managers, and service functions
  • managing operation, supervision, and maintenance of premises, workshops, studios, and technical equipment
  • being responsible for safety-related issues, such as access cards, keys, alarms, occupational health and safety procedures, and safety procedures at public events, as well as waste management, including special waste
  • administering lending, inventory, maintenance, and configuration of technical equipment for sound, video, photography, and presentation technology (e.g., media players for sound and video)
  • providing artistic and technical support and guidance to students and staff in connection with artistic production (e.g., video and sound installations)
  • introducing new students to the artistic and technical use of relevant equipment, software, and methods for recording and processing sound production
  • supporting the planning and implementation of student exhibitions, public art events, and artistic installations
  • administering relevant systems and registers, such as licenses, student lists, email lists, and chemical registers

Other duties may be added based on the needs of the operations.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have:

  • Relevant post-secondary education or current work experience that the employer considers equivalent
  • Documented experience of working in an artistic activity or another related production environment
  • Good technical competence in video, sound, and media installations
  • Experience working with presentation technology, such as media players, projection, and multi-channel installations
  • Good knowledge of analog and digital sound technology as well as recording and sound processing
  • Good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish and English
  • Good knowledge of Office programs
  • Category B driver's license

Great emphasis will be placed on documented experience of working in an artistic activity or another related production environment, technical competence in video, sound, and media installations, and personal suitability.

You are self-motivated, structured, and solution-oriented, with a good ability to handle and prioritize among varying tasks. You have very good collaboration skills and are service-oriented.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with software such as Logic Pro, Audacity, or GarageBand
  • Experience in technical production within contemporary art, exhibition activities, or similar
  • Experience in procurement within public operations
