About the job

As a surgical specialist at the University Hospital for Animals (UDS), you will primarily work in the operating unit, recovery ward, and ICU. You will be part of our surgical team, working with excellent animal healthcare, teaching, and research. It is a varied and stimulating daily routine in a 24/7 operation at Sweden's only university animal hospital.

You will support and develop the surgical team, provide guidance and support to nurses, ensure that the flow through the operating unit is patient-safe and efficient, supervise and teach students as well as residents and junior veterinarians. You strive to engage in the strategic development and leadership of the clinic.

An important part of your work will involve giving advice to and collaborating with veterinarians in other disciplines, such as critical care and ward care. Regular consultations with veterinarians, including referring veterinarians, are an integrated part of this role.

You collaborate with our management group, subject representatives, and specialists with the aim of developing our employees within the subject.

All employees at the university animal hospital are on call-list agreements, which means work can be scheduled at all times of the day.

Since SLU is the only educational institution for animal health personnel in Sweden, you will be involved in the education of future veterinarians and veterinary nurses. Opportunities to participate in ongoing clinical research exist.

Your background

You are a licensed veterinarian with permission to practice veterinary medicine in Sweden, and have international (diplomat) or national (step 2) competence in surgery. It is an advantage if you are also a PhD or have teaching experience.

Good knowledge of English is required, and you speak either a Scandinavian language or are willing to learn Swedish within approximately 2-3 years.

You are communicative with a good ability to create and maintain good relationships with clients and colleagues. You have a good ability to involve the operating team in daily patient flows.

As a veterinarian at the university animal hospital, you have a scientific approach and interest in evidence-based care and are positive towards our learning environment. You are interested in teaching and participating in the work to create good conditions for research. You know that an event-driven operation with irregular working hours is something you can handle.

As a person, you are structured, methodical, have good self-insight, can relate well in stressful situations, and have a desire to contribute to the operation. In this recruitment, we will place great emphasis on your personal skills.

About us

The Department of Clinical Sciences is responsible for basic education, research, and doctoral education in anesthesiology, imaging, animal care, epidemiology, laboratory animal science, surgery, clinical chemistry, medicine, and reproduction. Within all subjects, our operations cover all animal species.

At SLU University Hospital for Animals (UDS), education, research, and advanced animal healthcare go hand in hand. We educate tomorrow's veterinarians and veterinary nurses and provide first-class care to companion animals, competition animals, and production animals. We also spread knowledge to the public. By combining established knowledge with the latest research results, we are developing the animal healthcare of the future.

Under one roof, healthcare is offered for horses, dogs, cats, and other small animals. In addition to modern, operation-adapted premises, we have access to advanced imaging and a veterinary medical specialist laboratory. The UDS operation also includes an ambulatory clinic that visits stables and farms to examine and treat horses and livestock.

The small animal department has approximately 80 employees and receives over 17,000 patients annually.
