Sveriges LantbruksuniversitetVästra Götalands län, Lysekil
Previous experience is desired
About the job
As an Environmental Analyst, you will primarily be active in the projects conducted by SLU Aqua to monitor and estimate bycatch in fisheries. The work involves data collection, data entry, quality assurance, method development, and analysis of data from both field sampling and camera-based monitoring on fishing vessels.
Your responsibilities include supporting project management and contributing to the development, coordination, and quality assurance of workflows related to video material handling and data transfer to databases. You will work with ongoing analysis of recorded image and video material from fishing trips, including quantitative analysis of catch and bycatch events as well as assessment of video quality. The work also includes routines for taxonomic assessment of bycaught individuals and development of methods to complement visual assessment, for example through sampling for genetic analysis or other quality assurance methods.
You are expected to contribute to data compilation, simpler analyses, report writing, and documentation of methods and routines. The position may also involve assisting in the development, testing, and evaluation of AI-based tools for image analysis.
The position also includes field service within various types of sampling programs, both on board commercial fishing vessels and research vessels of different sizes. Field work may involve flexible working hours, travel, and some work on weekends.
Your background
We are looking for someone who is responsible, meticulous, and accustomed to working systematically. You have a good ability to organize your work, follow routines, and at the same time identify needs for improvements in work processes and data quality. You thrive working both independently and in teams, and you communicate easily with colleagues, project management, and external actors.
You have an interest in the marine environment, fish, fishing, and environmental monitoring. Since the work involves both data management, quality assurance, and field work, you need to be flexible and able to switch between practical, analytical, and administrative tasks.
We will place great emphasis on personal suitability.
You should have:
- A bachelor's degree in biology, marine biology, environmental science, or another subject relevant to the employment, or other education deemed equivalent by the employer.
- Experience in working systematically with data entry, data control, or data quality assurance.
- Good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in Swedish and English.
- Good computer skills and experience working in Excel or similar tools for data management.
- Ability to plan, drive, and develop work processes.
- Ability to work meticulously and independently according to established routines.
- Good sea experience and the possibility to participate in field work on board commercial fishing vessels and research vessels.
- Driver's license (Category B) and access to a car.
It is an advantage if you:
- Have experience in quantitative analysis of image or video material.
- Have experience with camera-based monitoring, video analysis, or other image-based data collection.
- Have experience in method development, process development, or project-coordinating tasks.
- Have experience in field work, especially on board commercial fishing vessels or research vessels.
- Have completed a sea safety training.
- Have experience working with databases, R, or other tools for data compilation and analysis.
