Database Coordinator
The Department of Marine Sciences conducts research, education, and innovation within marine science and its resources. The operations are based in Gothenburg, at two research stations (Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory), as well as on the research vessel Skagerak. The department has an interdisciplinary focus covering marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, conservation of maritime cultural heritage, and oceanography, and works in all marine environments from shallow bays and coastal seas to open oceans. Our researchers and students often hold leading roles in international research collaborations, including expeditions to polar regions and the world's oceans, as well as in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analytical methods. The department also offers a wide range of basic courses, a bachelor's program, three master's programs, and doctoral education in marine sciences.
Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a highly motivated and curious data coordinator who wants to join our team and contribute to facilitating our marine research through improved data management of our unique observation datasets. In this role, you will work at the intersection of oceanography, computer science, and environmental research, contributing to transforming raw data into quality-assured and searchable datasets that in turn support scientific research and decision-making.
You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of engaged researchers and students. Your work will contribute to improving our understanding of ocean dynamics and the ocean's impact on climate variations.
The position suits you if you have a strong interest in both scientific exploration and advanced data analysis, and want to work with varied oceanographic datasets, ranging from in-situ based ocean robotics to ship observations.
If you are driven by curiosity, enjoy working with large amounts of data, and want to contribute to a deeper understanding of the ocean and its role in the Earth system, we look forward to receiving your application.
More specifically, the data coordinator within the Polar Gliders research group will be responsible for all aspects related to data, including data quality control (in consultation with researchers) and management of our servers. There may also be opportunities for travel (project meetings, planning meetings for research cruises, and workshops) within the framework of ongoing projects, including the ERC projects WHIRLS (http://www.whirls.eu/) and SOFIA, with partners in France, Germany, and South Africa.
Job Responsibilities / Responsibilities
We are looking for a person responsible for data management and computer science activities within Polar Gliders (http://www.polargliders.com/), which includes but is not limited to:
- Processing of observation data (gliders, USVs, ships, etc.) according to metadata standards and FAIR principles
- Further development and maintenance of our ERDDAP data server
- Publication of observation data to Zenodo and ERDDAP for distribution
- Maintenance of our operational website — obs.polargliders.com, including reproducible code that converts raw data into scientific visualizations
- Management of Google Drive documents related to the operation of observation platforms, sensors, and control
- Administration of our local server
- Depending on the candidate's interests and ambitions, training may be provided in remote control of gliders/USVs and participation in oceanographic research expeditions
Qualifications
Master's degree in oceanography or equivalent university education. Good teamwork skills and ability to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment. The candidate should have good experience working with open-source systems such as GitHub and Python.
The work requires good ability to collaborate with different professional groups in an international environment as well as being proactive in identifying potential problems. Good ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is a requirement. Interest in technical aspects of scientific sensors and their integration is desirable.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.
