The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is Growing – We are Building New, Renovating, and Expanding

We are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transport.

The Saltvik area includes the prisons Saltvik, Härnösand, and Ljustadalen, as well as the detention center Saltvik. Within the area, there is a wide range from the open women's prison Ljustadalen to the closed prison Saltvik, which in addition to regular departments also has one of the country's three security units. The prison in Härnösand is also a closed facility. The largest professional group is prison officers, but there are also healthcare professionals, administrative staff, educators, production leaders, etc. The inmates are engaged in education, various treatment programs, or work within the prison's packaging/assembly, laundry, or wood industry. You can easily reach the Saltvik prison and detention center by bus or car and park in our staff parking. The prison in Härnösand is located in the town center with good bus connections and staff parking. The prison Ljustadalen is just outside Birsta and also offers staff parking and good bus connections.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a prison officer, you are present where it happens and contribute to stability in a complex everyday life where you can make a difference for others and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and belief in human development.

As a prison officer in the Saltvik area, you have daily contact with the client. You also work closely with colleagues and other professionals to create a safe and secure environment. The tasks at the prison and detention center are varied and include care, surveillance, searches, security, conversation/motivation work, and planning for the client's execution of sentence. In the detention center, clients may be held for long periods without meeting anyone other than their lawyer and the staff at the detention center, which places special demands on you as a prison officer. Here you will use both your calmness and your understanding of people to contribute to order and routine.

You will start your employment at the workplace where you will receive an introduction over three weeks. After a period of service, you will be offered a place in the mandatory basic training for prison staff, which lasts 8 weeks. You will receive a salary throughout the training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments will be conducted regarding your eligibility for permanent employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important to us. As a prison officer, you need to be secure, stable, and have good self-awareness. Since you will be working with your colleagues to run the operations, you need to have good collaboration skills and the ability to communicate clearly. Good judgment and integrity are required in your professional practice. You must have a physical condition that allows you to act physically when the situation requires it.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment.
• Completed secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant.
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing.
• Good computer skills.

It is an advantage if you have:

• Work experience from corrections, security work, educational work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare.
• Education in relevant fields, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management.
• Relevant language skills.
• A valid driver's license (B).
