The position is within the program for atmospheric, water, and landscape sciences, LUVAL, which gathers research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. As a PhD candidate, you will work within the framework of the Doctoral Network project: "Understanding and Predicting Impacts of Climate Extremes under Global Change", funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation program under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 101226348, which formally starts on March 1, 2026. The project consists of an international consortium coordinated by Uppsala University. You will be part of a leading group of early-career researchers studying various aspects of the impacts of climate events, from public health and societal impacts to agriculture, and you will have access to a rich program of training activities and research exchanges. In accordance with MSCA rules, the applicant must not have resided in Sweden and must not have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the three years preceding the recruitment date – unless this has been part of the process of obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention. The applicant must be within the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research career at the time of recruitment and must not have obtained a doctoral degree. The research career is counted from the date the researcher obtained the degree that qualifies for starting doctoral education. Part-time research work is counted pro-rata.

Job Responsibilities:

Your work will focus on developing forecasts of the effects of floods. These include, for example, economic losses, number of affected individuals, number of fatalities, follow-on effects, and intangible effects. The ultimate goal is to provide forecasting information that can support and improve the effectiveness of warning services. The job may also include teaching and other departmental work up to a maximum of 20%, which will extend the employment accordingly. You will be based in Uppsala, Sweden, and are expected to work on-site. As part of your duties, you will also need to undertake two internships abroad and participate physically in international meetings.

Qualifications:

Eligible for doctoral education is someone who has:

• completed a master's degree in hydrology, climate science, disaster studies, physics, environmental and water engineering, or related fields, or
• completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

The applicant must have good knowledge of spoken and written English.

Desirable/meritorious:

Experience in handling hydrological data and climate impact data and solid programming skills are meritorious. We also place great importance on the ability to interact in a multidisciplinary research environment and the drive to engage in collaborations within an international project.

About the Employment:

The employment is temporary, according to HF Chapter 5 § 7. The extent is full-time. Start date is September 1, 2026, or by agreement. Place of employment: Uppsala
