Hardware Reverse Engineer
At FRA, we work on something that no one else does in Sweden, and you can be a part of it. Regardless of your job role, we contribute to societal benefit by working towards a meaningful purpose — together we tackle unique tasks for Sweden's security and integrity.
We offer interesting tasks with good opportunities for personal development, and we believe that a mix of people from different backgrounds creates a dynamic and creative work environment – our differences are our strength.
Do you want to contribute to societal benefit and support Sweden's independence in the world? We are now looking for someone with experience in a lab environment who, in collaboration with your colleagues, wants to contribute to FRA's work by analyzing and deconstructing hardware systems and integrated circuits. At FRA, every task is part of something bigger. If you are the one we are looking for, we can offer a varied job in a knowledge-intensive environment where you can make a difference every day.
Your Mission
As a Hardware Reverse Engineer, you will belong to a unit within the cyber operations department. The department's two main tasks are to strengthen protection against qualified IT attacks from abroad on critical societal functions in Sweden and to develop and deliver access and exploitation capabilities to the signals intelligence operations.
You will be part of a smaller group tasked with analyzing hardware and embedded systems from a security and vulnerability perspective. Your work will support the entire department's operations. Together, you will carry out analysis assignments and development projects to ensure that you have the methods and tools required to complete the assignments. You will join a non-hierarchical group that actively helps each other to achieve common goals, and who believes that different perspectives and experiences enrich the work of the group.
Main Responsibilities
Your main tasks will include analyzing and deconstructing hardware systems and integrated circuits, primarily in the form of:
- Hardware deconstruction and exploitation of embedded systems through analysis of system architecture, electronics, various interfaces, and system software to identify vulnerabilities
- Pre-processing and preparation of integrated circuits for subsequent examination of their structure and developing methodology for investigating/analyzing various functions
- Development and implementation of methods, tools, and interfaces to extract data from integrated circuits found in, for example, computers and embedded systems
- Documentation of methods and reporting of analysis results
You will also spend part of your working time on research and development as well as knowledge acquisition, in the form of laboratory work and participation in courses and conferences.
Travel may occur in the position, both domestically and internationally.
You Can
We are looking for someone who has:
- An academic degree in, for example, electrical engineering, technical physics, or computer engineering, or equivalent knowledge acquired through work experience.
- Experience working in a lab environment, preferably from professional life
- Basic knowledge of C, C++, Python, Rust, and/or Assembler
- Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written
We consider it a merit if you have:
- An academic education in chemistry or materials technology
- Experience in the design or troubleshooting of digital electronics, preferably at the silicon level, and in commonly used buses, communication protocols, and interfaces in digital electronics
- Practical experience with electronic measuring instruments such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic and protocol analyzers, LabVIEW, or complex test systems with measurement and control
- Experience working with e.g. FIB, SEM, laser/plasma etchers, sputtering, or similar instruments
- Experience in the semiconductor industry
You Are
We place great importance on your personal qualities and are looking for someone who is:
- A good collaborator – You are a team player who works well with others. You relate to them in a responsive and smooth manner by listening and communicating constructively.
- Self-driven – You take responsibility for your task. You structure your approach and drive your processes forward.
- Resilient – You remain motivated and effective despite setbacks and disappointments and work until projects are completed or results are achieved.
- Problem-solving analytical ability – You work well with complex issues. You analyze and break down problems into their components and solve complicated problems.
At FRA, strong confidentiality applies, and it is important that you feel comfortable handling it.
