To succeed in the long-term competence supply within healthcare, we want to offer you as a nurse the opportunity to further your education to become a specialist nurse – with maintained base salary throughout the entire training period.

Seize the chance and train to become a specialist nurse in infectious diseases!

Our Offer

Region Östergötland operates throughout Östergötland. To continue to be at the forefront of care, research, and education, you as a nurse now have the opportunity to apply for training positions with us in areas of specialist competence that are in demand. This means you study with a maintained base salary and then receive a permanent position as a specialist in the region.

During your study period, you will have an introduction plan and regular contact with the manager at your future workplace. Once you have received your diploma, the training position will transition to a permanent employment as a specialist nurse in infectious diseases, where you will have more qualified tasks that require specialist competence for good and safe patient care. You will also receive a salary increase of 4000 SEK after completing your training.

Please read about Johanna who shares her experience of studying to become a specialist nurse and Isabel who is studying to become a midwife. Also, feel free to read about your benefits with us.

Focus Area

The work of a specialist nurse in infectious diseases differs from other specializations within nursing. Everyone can be affected by infections, which makes the subject broad, and patient care is tailored to their specific needs.

You have a greater responsibility to educate and pass on your knowledge in your workplace, thereby also supporting new nurses. Much of the knowledge you possess may be new to others, and the support you provide in departments caring for infectious patients is therefore invaluable.

With the in-depth knowledge of infections and infection control that you have as a specialist nurse in the field, you can work closely with responsible physicians and serve as a sounding board for medical decision-making.

A specialist nurse in infectious diseases possesses broad nursing knowledge, making you a valuable asset at any time during a patient's hospital stay. By informing about symptoms, what infections mean, and what treatments are recommended and offered, a specialist nurse in infectious diseases can support throughout the entire care chain.

Region Östergötland offers a training position for this specialization at the Geriatric Clinic at Vrinnevisjukhuset in Norrköping starting in autumn 2026. The training is provided by the Red Cross University, remotely.
