Summer Internship for Medical Students at NU Healthcare

NU Healthcare is part of the Västra Götaland Region and is one of Sweden's larger county hospitals. We are located at NÄL (Norra Älvsborg County Hospital) in Trollhättan and Uddevalla Hospital. The hospital's catchment area includes 280,000 residents. Together, we are about 5,000 employees who work every day to provide good and safe specialist healthcare. Are you studying to be a doctor and interested in a summer internship?

In the summer of 2026, we will offer junior doctor positions that are more focused on nursing work than traditional doctor roles.

The placement will be at the Observation Unit, NÄL in Trollhättan.

Observation Unit

The Observation Unit is for patients with a short length of stay (up to 24 hours) for care that can be completed within this time or to determine if further inpatient care in another unit is necessary and which unit is best suited to handle the continued care needs. The observation unit consists of 10 open care places without the possibility of privacy. These are distributed between medicine, surgery, and orthopedics, with 6 telemetry places. (Common telemetry patients: TIA; syncope investigation, atrial fibrillation - frequency regulation, intoxications).

You will follow the patient during their stay and be involved in planning, decision-making, and execution of care measures. Patient-centered care work provides a good foundational understanding of both patients' needs and the team's conditions, which are important experiences for future doctor roles. If you have previous experience in similar work, please indicate this in your application, as it is meritorious.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities vary and are adapted to the current operations and may include:

• Patient admission
• Monitoring and assessing vital parameters using NEWS
• Performing nursing measures and participating in basic nursing
• Updating and completing ongoing documentation in nursing status
• Preparing and administering medications
• Sampling, daily IV control, and placing IVs and catheters
• Participating in rounds
• Close collaboration with nursing assistants
• Conversations and support for patients and relatives

Qualifications

We are looking for you who are a medical student and by the summer of 2026 have completed at least the ninth semester of the medical program. Previous experience as a nurse, nursing assistant, or caregiver is meritorious.

You are good at collaborating, can adapt to different work situations, and prioritize as needed. You have a professional demeanor towards patients and relatives. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

To provide our patients with good and safe care, it is important that our employees have good language skills and the ability to communicate in Swedish. Your language level should be at least C1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), SVA 1 (Swedish as a Second Language 1 in municipal adult education) or equivalent.

Other

Attach a study certificate indicating which semester you are in/have completed and how many credits you have earned so far. If you have ongoing education abroad, you need to have your grades translated into English by your university. It should be clear which semester you are in.

If you have completed semester 9, you will be employed as a medical student.
