Polar Research Secretariat is looking for Scientific Divers

The Polar Research Secretariat is a government agency that promotes and coordinates Swedish polar research. The agency is responsible for long-term planning of research and research infrastructure as well as organizing and conducting research expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica.

The agency's overarching goal is to contribute to increased international impact for Swedish polar research through collaboration, high-quality research infrastructure, and international partnerships.

The operations include, among others, the Abisko Scientific Station, the Kristineberg Marine Research Station, the icebreaker Oden, and the Swedish research stations Wasa and Svea in Antarctica. The Polar Research Secretariat has about 50 employees and is located in Luleå, Abisko, Helsingborg, and Fiskebäckskil.

The Kristineberg Marine Research Station is responsible for promoting and coordinating marine research and development, including marine polar research. Kristineberg is a national research infrastructure and serves as a central platform for marine, coastal, and deep-sea related research.

The Polar Research Secretariat is now seeking qualified scientific divers for intermittent employment in our diving pool at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The position is needs-based and is suitable for those who want to contribute to marine research and education through practical work underwater.

Job Responsibilities

As a scientific diver, you will be part of a pool of divers participating in scientific diving missions. If you also qualify as a dive leader, there may be opportunities to lead and be responsible for safety during scientific diving in the field. The tasks vary depending on the research project and may include:

  • Good experience in handling measurement and sampling equipment underwater
  • Documented experience of diving in cold waters
  • For work assignments, you must have valid training in CPR/first aid (not older than two years)
  • Ability to speak and write fluent English

Meritorious

It is an advantage if you also have:

  • Swedish professional dive leader certification, at least DiveL S (for assignments as dive leader)
  • Good marine species knowledge
  • Authorization and experience in operating boats with outboard motors

Personal Qualities

We are looking for someone who is responsive to the needs of research and education during sampling and research assignments. You have good collaboration skills and enjoy working together with different professional categories in an international environment.

Other

The employment is a special fixed-term employment (intermittent hourly employment as needed) during the period from March 2026 to February 2027. You have the right to accept or decline each work assignment.

As an employee, you are expected to participate in annual emergency drills and competency training at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station as well as in meetings regarding occupational safety regulations for divers and dive leaders.

Location: Fiskebäckskil, Kristineberg Marine Research Station. Assignments may take place at other locations depending on the project.

The Polar Research Secretariat strives for diversity where our employees' backgrounds, experiences, knowledge, and personalities enrich our operations. It is also important to us that employees have the opportunity to combine work and private life.
